Stupid question about lever clamps?

Just wondering, when you mount a camera on a lever clamp, does the lever sit behind the camera or in front/under the lens? I've ALWAYS put the knob behind the camera, and naturally was trying it out the exact same way with the lever but it feels far more unnatural to undo the lever while still securing the camera. On the flipside, there is just something a little uneasy about having the locking lever on the opposite side hidden behind the camera body.

How do you use the lever clamp?

Behind the camera. My ballhead (Acratech) has a locking lever arm that would be frustrating to try and use if it were under the lens.

I position it to the left of the camera body, myself; it's easier for me to operate while mounting/unmounting the camera.

I always put it under the lens. I'm not sure why I do it that way but it always works.

Before I bought an L-bracket, I used a generic square plate that I could orient in any direction, and I put the knob on the left side because it stuck out too far and poked me in the face if I had it behind the camera, and it was hard to use under the lens.

When I moved to the L-bracket, I also switched to the RRS lever clamp and put it behind the camera where I can see and reach it most easily.

Obviously, everyone does it a little differently and it doesn't matter which way.

Lever goes under the lens because my plate has a bubble level on the opposite side and I can't see it in the reverse position.
