Another note... I'm reading on the NASA website where Shade 12-14 welding glass is fine for regular viewing... These have zero IR and UV protection. So is a camera sensor that much more delicate than the human eye?

I don't know where you heard that #14 welding glass doesn't block UV. but take a look at the glass code. If the manufacturer conforms to the ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2010 standard there will be two letters with numbers. WHat your looking for is W14 U6. I believe U6 is 99% UV blocked.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Ive seen Z87.1-2010 glasses with a 99.9% UV protection but I wasn't sure if they would work since they don't look very dark. I'll have to look at them. My Home Depot has 10 in stock.

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.

There are two different measures you are looking for, one for transparency. That one goes from 1.3 to 14 and one for UV which goes from 2 to 6. You want W=14 and U=6. That's really days and almost no UV. I'm sure that there is glass out there that's clear but blocks UV and glass that's dark but lets UV pass.

I went to our home Depot and they don't have the glasses with those specs. In fact the ones they have are so lightly darkened I could see the package through the glaesses. So I didn't buy them. My last ditch effort will be the welding company not too far from me. If they have the shade 14 glass and the goggles I am looking at then I will go that route. I'll also check and see if they have the larger 14 glass so I can mount it to my camera. If they do then I will try and get some photos of the partial Eclipse.
