Need a free video editor

I tried using Microsoft Movie Maker, but it keeps crashing as I try and make our family video from a vacation with a combination of stills and video. Is there something better then Movie Maker without going the Adobe route?

Thank you all, I am trying out Shotcut as well as Davinci. With regards to Davinci, I thought I had a pretty good computer, this program is showing me just how wrong I am lol. Davinci might be a bit over kill for what I need, however I am finding it easier to navigate and understand, just comes a bit more naturally.

If you own photoshop you can do basic video editing with it.

Openshot sounds like it may be more appropriate for your project.

Just an FYI.... Noticed OpenShot has released version 2.4.0. Dramatically improved stability. Nice to see so much active development.

A bit late, but I am about to try Hitfilm4 Express for editing videos for youtube. It is free and if it works then $350 for the pro version doesn't seem that bad, unlike the $600 for the Sony Vegas Pro.

For my needs, I just need to add a sound track, cut clips, and add words/titles on the screen.

With their release of DaVinci Resolve 14 last month, Blackmagic seems to be moving to a solid position for the best freeware video editor.

If you're going to invest your time in learning software, and will come to depend on it, wouldn't you like to know that it will still be around and updated to new camera codecs and computer hardware in years to come? I think Resolve has that.

I totally agree with all of the posters recommending Resolve. At first, you'll look at it and go cross-eyed. Just take a Lynda.com course on DaVinci Resolve, and you'll soon get comfortable with it. It's free, commonly used in professional video studios, and seems to get better and better with each new version.

Lightworks works very well for free.
