New post for lightstand?

Hey Gang,

I have a couple of Flashpoint xplor 600 strobes that I love using on location. My current stands have a standard round post that the light fits nicely on. I'm afraid to tighten it down too much for fear of stripping the fastener but when the wind is a little stronger my assistant has a hard time keeping the modifier and light swiveling on the post. Are there any replacement posts that I can put in my stands? I've try searching but don't really know the keywords to use.

Perhaps tell us which stand you are using?

Hi, You are asking about the stud, spigot or Baby Pin (all 5/8th in) fitting at the top of your stands, no?

None of them are primarily designed to resist torsion (having no 'flats' milled into the 'neck' section). My solution is to use a MF Superclamp, complete with snap-in 6 in extension arm, firmly attached to the stand's upper riser, c 4 in below the stud. Replacing the arm's double ended spigot, I fix an 18 in length of 16mm Alu rod (hardware store) up from the 6 in Extension arm and bungy the modifier to the rod. If that still twists, the wind is going to be causing lots of other problems as well.

Exactly so. That retaining screw is the dumbest idea, but studio folk are stuck with it. My variant solution uses a gag and baby pin to create a right angle turn. This may protect the weak axis from rotational stress by the wind, or not.

. . (following on from the post 4 up) - somewhat like - but with the rod taller . . (the modifier would be on the far side, away from the handles. Bungy the modifier edge - or the Strobe near its bayonet mount, gently to the rod - )(Gentle bungy? - Search under Marine store sources for 'Olive' or 'Tyga' shockcord cleats):

I have one of those stands. I needed a longer stud for a off set rig, and went to Home Depot to get a 5/8" steel rod, cut down to right size, use a metal file to create flat spots at both ends. Attached pic shows what it looks like.

In the real windy condition, have the assistant grab hold the corner of the modifier, at the wind incoming side, will help a bit.

I was about to source parts from this website http://www.powerjackmo​tion.com …ry/metal-maching-service/ when something went wrong to my tripod, but I decided not to do it anyway and bought a new tripod instead. If they could machine a new lightstand for you, then maybe they can be of help; however, you have to be accurate with your sizing if you decide to have one machined for you.
