What sort of personal style are you trying to develop?

There is no "best" preset. Some of the ones that come with Lightroom are pretty good, at least as a starting point. Some of the free downloads are worth it. Some of the paid presets are pretty good, but in my experience the results never quite look as advertised. Nearly all of them will need additional adjustment, since your white balance, exposure, and subject matter will be different than the photos used to advertise the preset.

All the presets are just different combinations of the sliders in the panels in the Develop module.

I got my presets a long time ago, with Lightroom 2, when the WOW PhotoPresets were free...now they want $40, but my free presets continue to work on LR5 without issue. It seems that LR5 came with a bunch of presets, as standard feature...what software do you use?

This!!

When I first started Lightroom I thought my pictures would be so much better, now that I had a Gazillion different presets to choose from.
I bought some packages and found a lot of freebies.
Then, I started trying to incorporate them into my "vision" of the pictures and ended up wasting tons of time trying to find the magic preset that worked for me.
After a while I thought "forget this!!" and decided to create a collection in Lightroom with a wide range of pictures that fitted what I usually shoot. I then proceeded to create presets that would be usable most of the time, with a minimum of tweaking, by looking at how they worked on the pictures in the collection.
I now have presets for Color as well as Monochrome in different variants (Faded blacks, vignette, grain etc.)
I still have to make minor adjustments most times though, but my workflow is must easier now.

This is what works best for me, and what I would recommend.
