Sure you can. It all depends on the circumstances. Both of these were shot without filters.

Yes we have all shot sot the sun in some way without a filter. I do it for sun flare but the sun is small for those shots. But Canon specifically talks about the eclipse and says not to it will ruin the lens or camera. http://learn.usa.canon​.com …eclipse-photography.shtml (external link)
