I also know I haven't been here in years!!!

the red ring cracked/broke/fell off my Canon EF 24-105 that I use (primarily) on my 1Ds MKIII while I was photographing my latest pencil drawing (that's mostly what I do with my cameras these days... :D )

Should I try to fix it? Glue? Send it in? (way outta warranty) or just quit whining and get used to it?

Hope everyone is well!

My 24-105 L Red Ring fell off as well a few years ago. A little bit of Scotch Tape has been keeping in place since........Fingers Crossed........

Funny, it cracked and fell of my 24-105 a few years back, and I just tossed it (the ring, not the lens).

This is one of my more used L lenses, but it's still the only one to lose the red ring.

You might want to review the thread at https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/2383260 (external link).

But an important takeaway is the ring is part of the barrel assembly and the part alone cost $123.04 around 2011. That does not include any labor. Needless to say many have learned to live without the ring.

Additionally, someone makes the comment that gluing is bad idea because the red ring touches the rubber focus ring. Once the glue dried, the ability to use manual focus is gone. However, some have said they positioned the break at the bottom and they make no mention of loss of manual focus.

I don't have the lens but you do so let us know.

I suggest just finding a red rubber band that will fit and mimic the look if it's that important.

That is probably because the lens itself feels not up to L standard, and naturally sheds its red ring.

The Canon 24-105 f4L is a super lens. It's out of favour at the moment for some reason. It may not fare as well as some in charts/brick walls/MTFs and all that good stuff but mine is used more than most of my other so-described as superior lenses. It's just such a dependable and handy FL for those occasions when you do not want to lug around all your gear.
The V2 has been a big disappointment. Opportunity wasted by Canon.

There is a reason the 24-105 is one of the least expensive L lenses and was a kit lens for a decade. I never understood why it was an L, after a few copies, I was never impressed with more dense sensors with that lens, and other non L lenses were sharper with better results. It was a great range though at a constant f4. I wonder how the Sigma art is doing these days.

Oh well, live without the ring, it didn't make it any more L-like when it was on, nor does it make it any less without it. :)

This is twice now that I saw the title, opened the thread, and thought to myself "What's the problem with Super Glue?". Then I stopped myself and said "I'm sure he thought of that, don't bother posting.".

At the risk of seeing the thread again, and thinking the same things, I'm just gonna post...What's wrong with Super Glue???

1) some glues strong enough to keep the ring on would melt the plastic
2) messy
3) permanent should you get it where you don't want it
4) A lens with superglue on it is worth less than a lens without the ring
5) you could glue your fingers to each other, or worse to the lens :)

If it's important, you can buy replacements.

If the red ring fell off, take a toothpick to use as an applicator with clear silicon sealant, and in a few places lightly coat the lens barrel where the red ring goes, then put the red ring back on the barrel and set the lens aside for a few hours.

Paint a new stripe on it with fingernail polish... your choice of colors.

Or get some pin striping tape at the local auto parts store.

Funny, though... That seems to happen a lot to 24-105L.
