Just got me first set of strobes, the Flashpoint RL600b. I have two of the TRS controllers but need a transceiver to mount one of them to. Is the $33 R1 all I need or is there one better that controls power? Suggestions and opinions needed.

It is! Strobes and HSS are new to me so I guess I am just a little confused. Adorama said I need 2 R1's. Am I going to attach one of the TRS controllers to my camera and the R1's to the flashes?

What would be the difference between the R1 and this?

I got mixed up on which unit you have... I did a little bit of reading but now I'm not too sure on compatibility. The link to the RL-600B is this one:

https://www.adorama.com …l600b.html?discontinued=t (external link)

But adorama shows this to be discontinued... is this the exact unit you have?

My interpretation is if you are not using the supplied 2.4ghz trigger then you would need to use the cellsII transceiver the $33 unit and you'll need two and have one at the strobe plugged into the sync port via cable.

Did you get these lights used or direct from adorama? If Direct what was the pricing like... I'm surprised you didn't buy into the R2 system.

What I recommend would be using this as a transmitter: https://www.adorama.com/fprrr2tc.html (external link)
Then use this as a receiver: https://www.adorama.com …rc.html?CategoryID=122636 (external link)

You can get them as a kit when you click on "Slave Set"

This way you are already setup to add on more R2 lights if you wish to expand later. I've attached an image of exactly how it would look (taken from adorama product image page)

You would still use the supplied wireless trigger to make remote power adjustments but you would not use it as a trigger... use it as a handheld remote basically.

Hi, I agree with Talley, immediately above.

I happen to use a Phottix Odin (original) trigger on-cam with a Strato II receiver cabled to the Strobe - and - the native trigger handheld for power setting 'pre-shot'. This works very well and offers 'above-max-sync-timing' when needed. That & Talley's Godox X1 are capable of extracting the necessary early trigger timing associated with the first curtain starting its move (fractionally before, in fact).

Note that the 600b does not do 'Pulsing' type HSS at all - it offers the Long burn or Supersync type of 'above-max-sync-timing' film plane coverage. So there is a gradient, darker at the top in landscape, but IMO, it's not a deal breaker. So you need camera and sender sending 'HSS' timing and the Strobe showing "H-lightening bolt" on its screen. Without that, the strobe operates as an IGBT unit, but with that icon showing, it forces long duration flashes down as far as 1/16th power. Always unset "H-lightening bolt" when you are not requiring Supersync.

I hope these also help:

Thank you guys for all of the info! I looked at the ad600 and while there's no doubt that would have made it a little easier, I got these basically new for less than what I would have paid for the AD and a decent beauty dish.

No worries, that RL-600B is a very capable unit. Absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. If you stick to the trigger/receiver I suggested it will give you a very robust system and all you would need to do is hardwire the receiver into the flash unit via it's sync port. If you wish to expand later then your ready to start buying into the R2 sytem from there.
