Pawpaw

The pawpaw is the largest edible fruit native to the US. These are a few of the fruits that I found on a tree growing on the side of the road. They aren't quite ripe yet, but I'm hoping to return in another couple weeks to taste it. They're reported to taste similar to banana, mango, and cateloupe. There are varieites that can grow as far north as Vermont, but their native habitat goes only to about central Pennsylvania. On the southern-side, they can be found down to South Carolina and Georgia.

I think their taste is actually unique. I don't find them tasting like any of those, not even combined. Tasty things, when they're ripe. Excellent for the stomach and sluggish bowels.

Look for them on floodplains.

Regarding your photo, showing the leaves would have been a good addition.
