So far, Dustin Abbott's reviews show a lot of back and forth between the ΣA and the G2; depends on which parameter is being judged. For another $300 I could get an LII. I'd like to see a comparison between the three of them (LII, G2, ΣA).

from my recollection, from 24-50, the tamron is very strong and comparable to the L mkii, @70, the 24-70ii is much stronger at all apertures.

optics are the same with g1 and g2 so this review will be somewhat relevant.





at the time of release, the 24-70ii would sell for 2200 and tamron for 1300? It was a pretty simple decision with those prices and the fact I bought the tamron before the mkii released. The tamron was better than the 24-70mk 1, so fair deal. fast forward some years and the price of both lenses have gone down dramatically.

for me, easy choice, canon 24-70ii, I dont need VC/IS. Super optics, reasonable price.

Looks good...but please don't let facts get in the way! I like the "ART" designation on the Sigma better!

This is a good objective video. Good data point for comparison. It appears the G2 fixed the AF issues which were so prevalent in the G1. To me that's a huge win. It appears there some improvement to the "onion" bokeh that had greatly troubled the OCD folks Probably in most cases, it will be good enough. The VC looks stellar so if this lens is used for video, low light, this could be another huge win.

I'm curious how this lens compares to the Canon mk2. That comparison on The-Digital-Picture seems all wrong. I think the guy does good work, but a blurry picture at f8! This can't be right.

I hope DA does a Canon vs G2 comparison. I know people are just itching to see this.

5DSR, it'll show more flaws clearly compared to a 24mp camera. Look at the 24-70vc on the 1dsiii test. It does well, but issues are masked.

the optics are not the same from the G1 to G2 tamron. its clear in Dustin review there is a good bit of an upgrade in the optics. its not soft in the corners anymore and sharp from edge to edge.

Hmm, if I compare the Sigma Art 70mm@f2.8 vs G2 70mm@f8, the Sigma Art is sharper!! Oh really. Again, this can't be right; can't imagine any lens better at f2.8 than another at f8.0.

Tamron, the manufacturer, posts the exact same design and MTF's

as for dustin's review showing the new one better, It can come done to a decentered lens and/or field curvature. The fact that the G1 was sharper than the G2 could have been focus issue. Testers like Klaus would refocus on each part of the frame to account for field curvature, Dustin didnt do that here.

After viewing DA's review, I was inclined to disbelieve your first statement. The screen shot below is from Tamron's respective pages (VC left, G2 right). Same glass, in the same arrangement, with the same MTF curves. Now I find it odd that DA is showing some much optical improvement in a lens with the same optics. Only the focus mechanism, VC, and diaphragm are different.

I had the original. I wasn't impressed. But my biggest complaints were AF performance and AF speed. We shall see.

Is the G2 also a reverse, Nikon type zoom ?
Otherwise I don't find it so handy to buy...

It's Nikon style.

So, I ordered this lens yesterday...once I receive it and have some time to use it, I'll gladly report back.

If it's as good as the 70-200mm f/2.8 G2, I'll be very happy.
