Before and after playing with Apple Photos. The downsizing took away a lot of sharpness.

East coast of Scotland. I love this camera. First and last were taken with a 16 stop ND since a 10 stop doesn't really smooth things out enough for that sort of shot on a sensor which limits your aperture to f8 to avoid diffraction.

It's weirdly inconsistent at 600mm equivalent, sometimes pin sharp and sometimes with an unusual glow and softness to the image, but I often think that might be as much down to atmospheric conditions as anything to do with the camera. The pier jump shot above is not far off if not quite there, but I ever rarely push it that far anyway. In truth I often feel like I could get the same results with a much smaller RX100va and save my back some grief, but I much prefer the handling of the bigger camera and it is good to have the reach at a push. You can get very compressed compositions which just aren't available on the smaller camera.

Out walking the lake today when this guy came up behind me and started squawking in flight. Luckily I had my camera in my hand and turned on. Grabbed a few quick shots of him.

Unfortunately I finally found the one thing about the RX10iv that I couldn't live with. I always use wrist straps and carry my camera for hours at a time and unfortunately between the camera and the squash court I've developed very painful tennis elbow. I know it's more the camera than the squash court - I feel the camera pulling at my elbow every time I pick it up now.

I've sold it on that basis and replaced it with an RX100iv and a Fuji X100F. I'll miss it but as I've posted a few times now, as primarily a landscape and street photographer I very rarely used it past around 100mm so the extra size and weight didn't justify the pain of carrying it around and lifting it to the eye. The 70mm of the RX100 will cover me most of the time, and the files are good enough for a reasonable crop.

Hi everyone, congrats on all the great photos. I currently have a Canon 7D Mk. 1 with a decent set of lenses (Tokina 12-24, Canon 24-105L, Canon 70-300L, Canon 60 macro) but don't use it much these days because of the weight. I shoot mainly dogs sports and wildlife, with some "people" and travel stuff, and I also have a small portable studio setup that I use occasionally for charity fundraising (animal portraits). I want a setup that is more portable, easy to carry when traveling, and less cumbersome to use. I'm hesitating between two possible ways forward: keeping my current kit and adding a decent compact camera, or selling my current kit and replacing it with a bridge camera. I'm leaning towards the latter and the Sony RX 10 mk. 4 is on my list. Thoughts on this camera's suitability for what I do? I've met one in person and liked the size and format but found the menu system complicated. In addition, I live in the frozen north (Canada) and need a camera that will function well in below zero weather, which we have for about four months of the year. The Sony also felt a bit flimsy and I'm wondering about its longevity.

Thanks for any advice you can give - much appreciated.

Maybe consider the Canon SL3, which is half the weight of your 7D. And trade your full frame lens for a crop frame lens.

The RX series is great if you have lots of light. I find the Canon crop frame cameras easier to operate, and the image quality is better.

I'll second that point. The RX10 can produce some amazing images in good light, but it quickly fades when the light does. Although, truth be told, it's no worse in low light than your 7D MkI. I own a 7D MkI as well and I find their low light capabilities to be similar. Shoot ISO 1600 or higher and you'll need some hefty noise correction. Keep it below 800 and you'll get nice images. But that is often easier said than done.

I also agree that the Sony's menu system is far less intuitive than Canon's. It can be a struggle to change simple settings sometimes, although with me a lot of that is because I've been using Canons for decades. I'm sure if you used only the Sony for a few months you'd have the menu and settings down pat.

BTW, my two favorite Canon lenses are the 24-105L and the 70-300L. I sold my 6D MkI and still regret doing it. That body paired with either of those lenses was magic, especially in low light.

Do you have the latest Photoshop, by any chance? If so, the new Super Resolution Enhance feature is amazing. It doubles your pixels/file size, so you can get a much better image out of a serious crop. I've used it quite often with BIF shots.

Thank you, I appreciate the input. I'm not unhappy with my 7D and lenses, I just don't use them much for casual photography, mainly because of the weight. I'm not as young as I used to be and it's become harder to carry a large bag of gear with me when I travel or when I just want to go for a walk with the dogs or spend an afternoon downtown.

I don't think I'd want to go from a 7D to a SL3. It wouldn't really make a meaningful difference to the basic problem of carrying a bag of lenses, and I'd also lose the better AF system on the 7D.

But I note your comment about the RX series needing good light.

It's not an easy decision!

Thanks, this is useful information. I'm not too concerned about the low light thing - I'm used to it with the 7D.

I enjoy the 7D and lens collection when I can just sit down and photograph an event, but these types of occasions are few and far between these days and I'm using the camera less and less for casual photography because of the weight. I just don't like hauling the heavy bag with me any more. I often don't pick it up for months on end and it seems a waste to leave it sitting there like that. On the other hand, I'm wondering about being dependent on a single camera/lens unit. How likely is it to break? It was one of my hesitations when I looked at the Sony: it didn't feel particularly robust even though it's said to be weather-resistant. I'm often in dusty conditions, or out in the rain or snow, and my current kit has been great for that.

Whatever I end up buying, it will need good AF for action shots and will need to be weather-resistant and not too heavy. It's not an easy choice.

Thanks again, I appreciate the advice.

I bought a Cotton Carrier Skout to carry my Sony RX10 when I hike. It works very well. I hardly feel the camera at all and it's ready when I need it. Plus it leaves my hands free.

Dubai Expo 2020, handheld. Just to give some context of what the RX10iv can do at night. These are wide-angle shots where I could lower the shutter speed without risking blurry photos.
Yes, you can use the RX10iv at night bu you need to be aware of the limitations. It's for sure not an A7iii.
