No probs. I thinks I've used the camera to photograph most things. I've found it a pleasure to use and so flexible. If you would like any other shots of things please feel free to ask and I'll see what I've got. :)

My friend's kids are mostly into track and cross country but as kids, there is also the occasional indoor school program etc.

Ever done any indoor stuff, sports or other events with the RX10? I would imagine it will work for close up indoor stuff with a f2.8

For closeup stuff you would want to stop down for DOF -- unless you want real artsy pics. In my experience the RX10 IV is not that great in low light or if you have to crop a lot.

That will probably be the big determining factor. I would guess that she will do quite a bit more outdoor sports as opposed to indoor but if that were to change, she might be better with DSLR and the ability to change out lenses

It works inside, but be prepared for higher ISO's and noise.

Here's a shot at a concert, so really low light and full extent of the lens. The images are still very usable. This was a jpeg image, not RAW.

Everything in photography is a compromise. The RX10 offers lower weight and convenience, but trades off low light performance. A DSLR will give better results if you don't mind schlepping it and its lenses along.

Her kids are pretty young yet, 7th grade down to kindergarten so probably hard to tell where their interests will ultimately lie. The DSLR route might give her greater flexibility.

How about an RX100 VI instead? - up to 200mm equivalent lens, same sensor as the RX10iv. Lovely little camera.

Would probably have the same low light/indoor limitations as the RX10, especially if action is involved?

Yes, but its more pocketable. I know when my kids were younger I was reluctant to be the parent turning up with an SLR to photograph them, so I didn't mind using the RX100 as they are extremely compact and still produce excellent images. :)

Careful of pocket lint, though. I had dust spots on my RX100 (ver 1).

Well. I finally got my RX10 M4 this week. Loving it so far and here is one of the first images I took with it. Took advantage of some nice light just before sunset.
Taken on Paugus Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee. I shot it from Winni Marine, looking across the channel towards the Naswa Resort.
