Last sunset of the decade & Beach Sunset. Got three Crystal balls for Christmas and I'm learning to be creative with them.

High flyer. The second picture shows where I shot the bird from. A great day to cruise

Hi everyone, I have just bought an RX10 IV which will be here on Friday, and just been looking at the fantastic photos on this forum, which has definitely convinced me I have made the right decision :) I will be going out on Saturday to a local nature reserve to try it out, and looking forward to trying out some birds in flight. Will try to post a few pics after that :) Jacqui.

Love to see your shots Jacqueline. The focus/exposure mechanism in this camera will hold its own against the best. I use mine daily and hope you have as much fun with yours as I have with mine.

Thanks, yes really looking forward to receiving it. I have had quite a few cameras, but get fed up with changing lenses, but still wanted the great AF and IQ, so this should fit the bill nicely :)

In good light Jacqueline its superb. I've got wonderful photos with the camera in the UK and have been amazed at the tracking and focusing ability. Feel free to ask any questions if you want.

For birds in flight have a play with the different focus modes, burst modes and used continuous focus. :)

Thanks :) I will try all the different focus modes out. Any particular focus mode recommended for birds in flight?

Continuous Wide is usually a good starting point. Continuous flexible spot if the birds are larger.

I think it was Gary (who shot that previous BIF shot) who explained how to set your settings for birds in flight to one of your programmable buttons so all you have to do is press that button if you see a bird and all your BIF settings are ready to go.
Another peculiar thing about this camera is that you have an "aperture ring" like old lenses had. So if you put your camera in aperture priority, the dial on your right rear of the camera will NOT set your aperture, you have to turn the bezel around the base of the lens to adjust the aperture (the bezel has aperture markings on it). The aperture bezel also has a button to make it click when turned or no click when turned. The button is located on the lens bezel close to your shooting hand. If you are trying to shoot something close to you and the camera wont focus make sure you have the button on the base of the lens bezel switched to "FULL". When this button is switched OFF of "full" the camera will focus only on far off subjects ie birds in flight. It's easy to forget this button.

Thanks for the tips, I will keep that in mind :) Yes I noticed that post regarding programming birds in flight settings to one of the programmable buttons, and took note of this, as this really appeals. I had something similar on an e-m5 ii once, and I loved that feature. Another quick question, I noticed the intervalometer app is no longer available for the RX10 iv, so I did a search on Amazon for an intervalometer and it came up with a couple of 3rd party ones. I guess these will be ok? Thanks.

Yes as long as they have the correct connection.

Well, took the camera out to our local nature reserve yesterday, and had a lot of fun trying it out. It was a dull, grey, cold day, so not the best weather for it, but still managed to grab a few shots. Noise was a bit of an issue, but as I say, weather was pretty dull, so to be expected really. I did try setting up bird in flight settings (memory recall) to a custom button, but found it only worked when you kept it pressed, and reverted back to normal settings as soon as you let go, which was a disappointment, as I thought you could just press it to have those settings. So I used the MR on the mode dial for this. After having played around further yesterday evening though, I set up a couple of buttons on the back of the camera to the memory recall settings, so it would be easier to press and hold them while pressing the shutter, to see if that would work better, but have yet to try this out. It's a shame that these memory recall settings on the custom buttons have to be held down to work, rather than just pressing them once to recall the settings and pressing them again to revert back to normal (a bit like Olympus e-m5 ii did when I owned it) It was great to see a bird flying and just be able to press a button to instantly have all the right settings. I have also found that programming settings in to a custom button actually keeps af mode (continuous af) and exposure comp too, unlike the MR on the mode dial, which seems to keep all settings except these 2, which you have to adjust separately, which takes more time, this is not a massive deal, just takes a bit more time, and a bit more inconvenient when you suddenly spot a bird flying over. I do wonder why this happens with the custom buttons though, when they have been programmed to memory recall settings. Why you have to press and hold, rather than just a normal button press. I would love to have my BIF settings available at the press of a button. Still aside from all that (If I've actually explained that well enough for anyone to know what I am talking about :) ) the camera seemed to do a great job, and after a quick look through the photos, I have managed to get a few that I am pleased with, especially considering the light, but still very much learning and getting use to it at the moment. Hopefully the weather will brighten up a bit in the next few days :)
