Apply Eraser tool selectively by color?

In either Photoshop or GIMP, is it possible to have the Eraser tool affect only a certain range of colors and leave colors outside that range untouched?

PS: I really dislike erasing when a Layer Mask will allow me to go back & tweak the image at a later time.
But to answer your question, have you tried to do it in Channels?

If it’s a range of colors you’d like to select, there’s a tool for that under select (this is for PS). It will allow you to sample and expand your selection. I would then use a layer mask, as previously mentioned, it’s not destructive.

As others have said, use a color layer mask, this will let you erase what you want. You can even pick the mask as a selection to make sure you're constrained to only that color.

The Eraser Tool is evil. In Photoshop, use select color range and, as others have suggested, use that selection to create a layer mask.
