In either Photoshop or GIMP, is it possible to have the Eraser tool affect only a certain range of colors and leave colors outside that range untouched?

It will allow you to sample and expand your selection. I would then use a layer mask, as previously mentioned, it’s not destructive. Canon 5D mk IV

The Eraser Tool is evil. In Photoshop, use select color range and, as others have suggested, use that selection to create a layer mask.
