most american pixma models can print on dvd's and cd's. look here,

http://pixma.webpal.info/IP4200/ (external link)

....i did it to my ip5200 and it works the same as the european versions. you dont permanently mod your printer and you dont need special drivers. it works great, canon never took out the function it just needs to be turned on.

Yooser22333.... THANK YOU!

This is excellent info! Although I no longer have a model that was equipped to do this.. I know MANY here do.

Very cool.

I remember a while ago before they figured this out, they had a hell of a time. they really dug into too far, trying to change registries and all. i dont know exactly when they accoplished the acheivement but i fugre someone from canon's service centers leaked the service menu procedures.

i just think its really cool of canon to not cripple thier printers and sort of sliding fully functional models through a back door. way to go canon, because they have the best printers without a doubt. i love my 5200, just need a chip resetter.

maybe this forum needs a new post or even a sticky about this mod. it would have saved me a lot of headache if i never had to suffer through the experience of epson's junk.

wow- top of the forum with my first post:D well thank google i guess, i was just looking for the mod to the newest canon printers out and found myself here.

Im still very excited about this mod myself, it makes me love canon even more then i did before. i used to have an epson stylus 400 and the new r200 and they were both dreadful. i ended up ripping the r200 to peices because it was so touchy. canons are like a tank, they make the best pictures, fastest, cheapest, pantent-bending, etc... what more could you want?

ps- any word on a chip-resetting function for the ip4200/5200 series? i still havent even seen compatible carts yet, it seems like canon is finally locking down good.

I love the Canpn printers too.. having owned a few of all the others over the years,. no color inkjets have been more robust and reliable as my i950 and i9100 have been. The i950 when replaced with the 9100 was donated to a church office,. hwere it sees laser printer like duty cycles kicking out hundreds of prints a week,.. truly amazing!

Oh and while were being official..

Thanks you for posting this great hack, however, its become another reason to pull out the last few strands of hair I have left.

I did the mod tonight and made the CD tray, carefully following directions, however can't get my Pixma 3000 to print. It draws the tray in, acts like it will print, but then rejects the tray saying either its not inserted or a writable CD is not loaded.

I did the same as the OP by gluing some paper on a plain plastic disc.

Any ideas? Could the cardboard I used be too thick, although it appears to be less than 1mm and feeds in fine.

yes, try blacking out the whole top of the tray with a black marker, beside the foil squares of course- dont cover those up. for some reason, once you black out the top (like from the top of the cd to the edge of the tray) it will suck in the tray and use it right.

however, the cardboard trays will give you alignment problems. i strongly suggest just going to ebay and purchasing a real canon tray. for $20 it will save a lot of slightly-misaligned cd prints.

Thank you so much, blacking out the top works like a charm.

I actually thought it might be the color of the paperboard, as the first tray I made was of white. I blackened the area around the foil squares, thinking that the sensor maight not pick up the foil, but it didn't work as I had misaligned the squares themselves. I made a second one out of dark brown paperboard, however, until I blacked that out, it also didn't work.

I think I'm gonna try the cardboard for awhile and see what happens. It does fit pretty well, so here's hoping the disks are not misaligned.

This post also solves one of those mysteries of life. What the heck is the function of that little door? Before this, it's only use seemed to be to not let the printer work when its opened.

Thanks again!

Hello, this is my first post. I've benn having problems with my Pixma MP600. I've followed all instructions and everything else works well. I have it set up in EUR (europe) mode and the "Printable disc" and "CD tray" options appear correctly on the Page Setup and Quality & Media part of the printing process in CD LablePrint.

The printer sucks the tray in and as it looks it's about to start printing, just pushes it out and gives me the "cd tray is not inserted" message. I tried the black marker method to no avail.

Please if someone can help me I'd be most thankful.

Welcome to these forums. You'll find a lot of really knowledgeable folks here.

When I first made my tray, I had the same problem. Thought I'd followed the directions very carefully, but when I rechecked the position of the foil spots, they were off ever so slightly and that made a difference. After re-doing those & adding the black marker, it all worked well.

I'd suggest you check the measurements again, or just buy the Canon tray. While I realize you're not in the US, they're selling here on Ebay for $15-$16 US including shipping. Other than the satisfaction of hacking, hardly pays to go through the aggravation.

Good luck,
