My camera bag rolled into a river in The Smokies....5d3, 16-35 f4, 24 tilt shift....Canon says totaled .. :(

Is it worth pursuing with someone to get them repaired? No insurance :(

Heart broken....

Any advice appreciated.....

Probably worth asking but I suspect that it's going to cost as much or more than re-buying used equipment.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

BTW, How wet did everything get? Totally submerged or just a little water?

Part it out "as is" for "parts". Be transparent with what happened to it. Someone might want to attempt repairs. Really, the camera itself could probably be repaired with the main board replaced, circuits, etc. The rest probably still functions. The lens may have lost some functionality, but it can probably still be manually focused. So really the only thing that needs repair there to work is something to allow aperture control again. Same with the tilt shift. There are people who may want to buy and attempt repairs.

Paying someone to repair them is a non-guarantee and you'll pay about as much as a used one of each would cost regardless as the person has to get the part(s) and be paid for their time (which will be considerable as you don't know exactly what is needed on each device).

Rotten luck.
But at least you didn't roll into a river and get broken.

Very best,

The good news is that my insurance carrier assigned my claim to someone who did not understand my policy. She called me back and apologized that she misinterpreted my coverage and insurance will be covering my gear.... Sigh of relief....

I soaked my 6D and EOS-M in the rain while hiking on an exposed ridge in Hawaii (bag was soaked, stupidly left my rain cover and waterproof bag at home).

I was able to dry out both bodies and they worked fine later (dried out over a month).

Have you tried the lenses out on any other equipment?

I suggest setting up in a dry bag and/or in front of a fan in a dry area (not in the kitchen/bathroom, etc). Remove as much of the body as possible to allow air to circulate inside the cameras. Don't part out or sell until you've given the equipment time to dry.

Was this gear insurance, or something else?

Very best,

I would like to know as well. I have never found a homeowners/renters policy that covered camera equipment and have always had a separate rider for my camera gear. Care to share the company name?

it was on a separate rider on the policy...the adjuster made a mistake looking at my policy and I took her word. I was going to call my agent to **** but she called me first thing in the morning.
