The really good ....
Your use of a fill light from the right. The fact that you did that is a huge step. Did you take one with the right light off?
The color of light from the right is a matter of creative choice, but I probalby would have at least taken a photo without the fill. And use a colder reflective srouce for the fill. (But again, your creative choice.)

Did you catch him saying something?

Now ... tell me about your 5D. I'm just learning the Canon line of dig, what does the L mean on the EF lenses?

I am not sure about your light source, but I assume that it is also from a lamp. Again, the white balance is a little too orange, in my opinion. However, the lighting is giving you a good 3-dimensionality and depth in the facial contours.

Very good "decisive moment" portrait. Congratulations.
