Klamath Basin Lodging

I'm planning a trip in November to the Klamath/Tule NWR's and just wondering if anyone has any hotel recommendations in the area? Seems like Klamath Falls is about an hour away? Not a problem, but wondering if anyone has stayed in the area before and knows of anything closer.

I go to the Klamath Basin refuges each spring to photograph staging waterfowl. . The Tule Lake and Lower Klamath refuges, both on the California side of the border, are the ones with the best photo opportunities (by a long shot).

As far as I know, there is no viable place to stay in either Mitchell or Tule Lake, which are the nearest towns. . Heck, there isn't even a good place to eat lunch in Tule Lake. Klamath Falls is actually much less than an hour from these refuges - I would say more like 20 to 30 minutes.

I stay at the Motel 6 in Klamath Falls. . I know that the price varies seasonally, and hence can't say what the price will be in November, but when I stay in the spring it is either $39.99 a night or $49.99 a night. . It's quite nice and clean and better than you'd expect for that price. . Plus, it's right next door to the Black Bear Diner!

There are a few similarly inexpensive places to stay on US 97, on the North end of Klamath Falls. . I've stayed at three of these places, all around $40 a night, but they are not nice places to stay at because they are dirty and old and often have seedy looking people hanging out around the place at all hours of day or night and the staff at the desk have trouble speaking English in a clear and easily understandable manner. . For basically the same price, the Motel 6 is much, much nicer.

As an aside, I'll mention that the Mule Deer will be rutting in November, and that the Tule Lake refuge, particularly along the road that the Visitor's Center is on, often provides some good opportunities to photograph the rutting deer at that time of year.

I follow Tom's example, not by design......hard to beat the Black Bear Diner next door.....yummy!

I ended up staying at the Running Y Ranch Resort after getting a great deal on Expedia. Very nice bar and restaurant right down the hall from my room

I will defiantly head back up there soon. It rained for my entire stay. Still got some great shots, but I will pay more attention to the forecast next time.
