I have had a client not respond after I delivered their digital images. Is this normal? I'm not sure if I should email them again to make sure they received it or just leave it alone? They were emailing me very consistently until I delivered them. Just curious on your thoughts.

This was for a family session. Mother and kids. I sent over the gallery and haven't heard anything back. Typically, they send an email saying thank you.

Well then, I'd chalk it up to an ungrateful client perhaps.
Unless they flame you on social media, but that would explain the silence.

But seriously. Don't sweat it.

Thanks! I figured if they did not like the photos they would have said it when they chose the images to be edited..so maybe they are ungrateful. Weird.

You presented unedited images to them?

I would not have done that.....

How is it ungrateful if one got paid the amount agreed upon?
Now if it was a favor even if they didn't like them then yeah you say thanks and if you didn't that would be ungrateful

But yes it would also bother me as well typically I get some sort of response the day after, and to be honest when it's a simple" thanks I received the pictures "and nothing after that even that would make me a little nervous as far as them not liking what they got

As someone else mentioned, you let them pick the images to be edited? You are the one who should have gone through the photos you took and decided which ones were keepers and which ones needed to be trashed and then do the necessary editing on them and present the final work to the client. You do yourself no favors by letting others make your choices for you.

You seem to be, at least a bit, complaining that your clients stopped pestering you after the business transaction was complete. I find that odd. The last time you filled up your gas tank, did you run inside and thank the clerk?

I've had clients like this. Absolutely no response. It's just how some people are, don't let it bother you.

Lots of people use proofing galleries. The proof gallery isn't necessarily every image, and isn't necessarily "straight out of camera" (whatever that means).

I often do an initial cull (deleting a lot of bad and mediocre shots) and apply a batch process to what remains, then present those as proofs to the client for their final selections. I do myself a huge favor by letting the client do the work of picking which ones get the full retouch.

To be fair, the clerk had nothing to do with the gas transaction, unlike the relationship between a photographer and the client. Now if the clerk came out and pumped the gas, and as I paid him, I would thank him. We used to have gas stations like that in fact.

Common courtesies like thank you, please, no - after you, let me get that... are all sadly going away as the general populace becomes more self-indulged.

My suggestion is that in about a week or two, just fire off a followup "thank you for your business" to the client, and throw in things like "if you need another session in the future, I would be honored if you select me again" and "if you have family, please refer them to me". See what kind of response you get.

Hehe don't overthink it. Some people just cease communication once the transaction is complete.

I get it though.....when they don't say anything, it sort of implies that they were not happy, which feels crappy even if you got paid. But I've had people not reply once I send the photos and then book me again later.
