Parhaps a better way to phrase the initial hypothetical question would have been,
"If the EOS 5D Mark IV and the Nikon D850 were both made by the same manufacturer of your current system, which one would you chose?"

The 6Dmk2 isn't that much of a jump and it shows that canon is sitting on it's behind and not doing anything. The D810's are dropping in price as people are getting ready for shipments of the D850. I have been looking at them as well.

In the end if you have the money go for whatever you want but I seriously dont believe it makes one a better photographer, I see evidence of this every day online What you cant put a price on is the level of enjoyment you have when getting something new. 6D; canon 85mm 1.8, Tamron 24-70mm VC, Canon 135L Canon 70-200L is ii

I need it 'cos it's new stuff ... is clearly the worst possible argument in favour of spending money that doesn't come easily for most of us. Pure consumerism is pretty repugnant. Everyone gets to choose what they can offer cannot buy, and if somebody just wants something new there is nothing wrong with that. That means the used market continually gets new inventory and those of us that are frugal can have nice things too at lower costs. I never want to be jealous of what others buy, so I don't begrudge them or find it repugnant. That kind of consumerism is what keeps me employed and also allows me to have nice things. I agree ... it's a useful behaviour pattern in other people that pays off nicely for those that don't have it. But wanting (worse ... 'needing') stuff just because it's new is not an admirable character trait. David.

Everybody has a vice, so if one has "a need for new things", who am I to judge that? As long as the person doesn't bankrupt themselves with this habit, their kids are taken care of, etc, who cares, there are worst vices out there. Some have very disruptive ones like porn, drinking, drugs, partying too late, fast cars, motorcycles, women, name it. Some just like to spend money on new things. It takes a bit better equipment and more skill IMO to shoot this. But that in itself isn't really all that challenging any longer, unfortunately. Better equipment makes it easier... and sometimes more boring. Past Equipment | My Personal Gallery

I am sure there are some on the board that would look at your or my equipment list and wish their circumstances were different to have those items, and some might even find it repugnant that we have so many bodies and lenses. This is why I try (but fail) to always be thankful for how the man upstairs has blessed us every day, especially when my wife and I come from the land of food stamps, govt cheese and butter back in the day, and free school lunches growing up.Now back to the topic of "if I had funds dropped into my lap, and owned neither brand, which would I get?"... I am trying very hard to stay away from any more reviews of the D850. I just need to hold out until Canon's next announcement.
Cheers,

More info | Oct 19, 2017 17:35 | #149 TeamSpeed wrote in post #18476311 Opinions never are. ![]() I once knew a married couple that had a competent FF body to shoot various things around them for fun, and then due to the struggles of having to share the body all the time and the IQ just wasn't up to the latest offerings, one of the newest and pretty expensive FF model is added to the bag, along with a rebel to combat some physical discomfort of shooting the FF, so that each of them can shoot with whatever made them comfortable whenever they wanted to, along with alot of lenses, some that overlap with each other. There didn't seem like alot of need generated all those purchases, but I don't judge them, they seem to be able to afford it and it made them happy. I don't mind people being 'rich'. Every now and again in my life I've been 99.5% there myself and I may/will be again. Onwards ... upwards. David.
