I can't stand Nikon's user interface or ergonomics. I would stick with Canon. And, in fact, have already had to experience that once when my gear was stolen. Although, there was no check :P

People get used to user interfaces. Why companies go to SAP for their operations astounds me, especially when they move from much more user friendly solutions, yet the users get "used" to the interfaces over time, and complaints stop. We are dealing with that now. :(

I feel the same about Nikon however I did test the D500 out. I was impressed with the AF. Not saying my 7D2 is not good but the D500 was in another league I thought. The shop only has a Sigma zoom and it was painfully slow to acquire initial AF compared to my 100-400 II but when it did every capture was bang on when shooting bursts of moving targets. I don't know much about Nikon lenses but I have read no one currently can touch the 100-400 II. It snaps in when focusing. I like the Auto MFA they use that works in conjunction with contrast detect AF. I never tried it.

I would also have to take a long look at which FF and crop system I would work with. One has to ask if you weren't used to any particular body how influenced would you by the interface and ergonomics? I owned a newer Metz flash, read multiple reviews of how bad the interface was and I found it easier to use than Canon's.

Edit. I forgot to say I like my Canon glass.

Familiarity and tolerance to change is the question here......

I think the D850 is a nicer body vs 5dmk4 due to more megapixels and same high iso performance compared to the D810.

Call it a poor man's digital medium format.......well sorta........

I'm sticking with Canon because I have most of the lenses I need and want. I do not want to start over.

Also the key lenses that is nice in Canon is the 16-35 f/2.8 mk3, 24-70L f/2.8 mk2 and 70-200 f/2.8 mk2 so that's one reason I stick with canon. Mind you I'm still budgeting to buy the 16-35 f/2.8 mk3 however ever since I got my 5dmk4 I seem to discover that all of my lenses seems to up the game in better image quality with the 5dmk4 sensor. My 16-35 f/2.8 mk2 has produced the best Iq with my newer canon body.

Yeah I should look into that 16-35. I really want the 400 DO II so what to budget for? I have taken to panos with my 24-70 2.8 II to compensate. I have to admit not the same as a WA but I do like them.

my brother shoots Nikon. He never borrows gear now. I'd like to keep it that way.

This is by far the best answer in this thread :)

For example, the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L II was $2200 when it came out.

The 70-200 IS II was $2499 when it was introduced, which comes out to ~$2850 when accounting for CPI inflation.

I think the d850 sensor is what set's it apart. 1+ stop more base ISO DR, neck and neck in terms of high ISO performance despite having close to double the resolution.

For me the sensor difference is insignificant, the bigger drivers would be the access to the 70-200E, better compatibility with Sigma lenses, and the 1DX-like OVF on the D850.

I've overloaded on searching as much as I can read on the 5D4 and I have read so many users having major issues with it, yet I;m not reading a lot of these problems by POTN users. It really makes me think that these issues are being beat up elsewhere. Some of the threads make one think you wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

Appreciate everyone's thoughts. It is and always has been a great forum this.

Honestly...I haven't heard of any major issues with the 5dmk4.

I've used my 5dmk4 and will have to say it's been a good positive experience so far just like my 5dmk3. I wont praise my 5dmk4 as the best in the world. However for a Canon product it's one of the better universal bodies to buy IMO. Again I'm not against Nikon so just have an open mind when you play with any camera system. Pros and cons to every system. Nikon is still weak when it comes to video AF using live view since it still relies on contrast detection alone. Even photos using live view apparently is not a good as other camera systems in the world.

Today I was just at my favourite local camera shop and they still do not have stock on the D850 at this moment. I wanted to test it today...... :(

I urge you to just test drive both bodies. I think the 5dmk4 is still going to do better than Nikon in the video department. However if your into stills mainly the Nikon has a definite edge on the 5dmk4. Also the 1/2 RAW option in nikon is still going to give you alot of megapixels to play with.

A stack of owners here for one saying that theirs isn't turning on and the bottom circuit board was fried by a quick battery drain -

What's weird is that I haven't read one issue like that here (well at least I have found any).

I keep GPS off so perhaps that is why I have never had an issue.
