If I had nothing, I would have to throw Sony in the mix and perhaps even Fuji. I say Sony because of the large compatibility with lens manufacturers. The image quality is there as well.

If I had to stay in one family it would probably be Canon again, it is all I have ever shot with and outside of resolution I dont see a big difference in 5d4 and the d850 for my type of use. That is not to say I think they are equal they are clearly not.

Ah yes, that extra 0.32 stop of DR makes all the difference.

It's not just DR, it means less likely to blow highlights with large aperture portraits during the day, and that's .32 stop on top of what you posted.

How about that unusable 4K you have to deal with till the next upgrade? Or the ability to shoot overhead without guessing? How about the money saved by not having to buy a crop camera for added reach?

.... If you had neither system, the decision is much harder and now only comes down to glass and nothing else.

When I answered before, I actually forgot one of my OWN reasons for sticking with Canon. I was thinking about "kit" as another member in this thread pointed out.
A post in another thread last night reminded me.

I grew up watching PBS, love nature, and support a number of environmental charities.
I also like to use my wallet to vote/support institutions, including companies, that show similar interests and concerns.

So Canon will continue to get my hard earned dollar based on their extensive philanthropy.

That's where I find myself and it is a hard decision.

I have to say I agree, starting over every decent stills camera would be on the table and would add in the MF Fuji and Hasselblad mirrorless options too. Nearly bought the Hasselblad but cancelled the pre order and got a new car instead, still on the table though just need to find a good project to warrant it.

I used to say glass lasts a lifetime. Modern DSLR's are just just computers with some moving parts. Not as much with the glass but that is still pretty accurate I think. Canon does up grade to meet the demands the of the precision digital sensors provide. Also so you get the latest FW advantages which I can't see why that can't be done with a download. My 24-70 2.8 II says FM 1.0.2 and I have never seen it change with any camera FW updates on any body. I know there is a difference between the 1.4 II and 1.4 III TC and a newer lenses. Not sure what that is.

Canon or Nikon. The age old question still has the same answer. Try them both and buy the one you like. No technical argument is going to tell you which camera is best for you. Megapixels, dynamic range... it doesn't mean squat. If you take bad pictures with either it isn't because of the camera.

You've got no gear at all, it all just magically disappeared and what was left was a check.
Your chance to start over.

- Would you get a 5DMKIV or D850 and Canon or Nikon glass to suit for your style of shooting?

I made my Canon FF and lenses disappear voluntary in 2016 and used the cheque for Leica lens.

I checked this Canon FF DSLR price. For 3.3K I would get just same I have now - Leica M-E and Leica lens.

As of Nikon, I have FG-20 and 50 E. It is 129$ FF. This is all I need for and from Nikon. :-P

Would depend on the budget for me. Canon and Nikon both make excellent glass, but Canon's been doing it a while longer so there's more deals to be found on older stuff on the used market. That being said, if I had to start over and only had say, $5000...I'd definitely go Canon because I can get a body, and a couple nice L lenses to go with it. If there were a large budget of $10k+ I'd go Nikon for the sensor and ergonomics, and then fill out the kit with their (IMO) overpriced lenses.

For me the available glass and sensor quality ends up being the most important. Fact is even though I shoot Canon bodies I use very little Canon glass. For my type of shooting AF doesn't matter, so I'm shooting manual focus Zeiss most of the time. In that light, outside of just being use to ergonomics a camera body is in effect just a sensor. These days all of them are pretty darn close in that regard (at least with the 5D4 coming out). Available resolution is pretty darn good across the board as well. If I were starting over with no lenses, I would be looking for the best sensor that comes in a very reliable package, that is also compatible with the focal lengths and quality lenses I like to shoot with. I can't say that would be Canon but they wouldn't be out of the running either.

It is great that Nikon was now the first to implement automatic AFMA. I always said that Canon could do this easily for us, but it is now Nikon that allows you to simply set up your camera and have it determine your AF offsets for each lens you own up to 20, like Canon. There was absolutely no reason Canon couldn't have developed this feature, especially with the advent of DPAF in live view, which could have been used for detection of AF errors from the phase-detect system.

No more test charts and purchases of glorified chart+ruler systems, just set up the camera with the lens, verify initial focus, and have the camera do the rest.

:(

Another thing besides all the other nice features of the D850 that have me looking at it.... It has one killer of an AF system as well, and high res 46Mpx at 9fps with the grip... The redesigned ergonomics and redesigned menu structure seems to quell some of its usage complaints too.
