Help Deciding next 2 lenses

This is a hobby for me. I have invested quite a bit, but love the nicer stuff.

Here is what I have today:
Canon 5d3 and 7d2 boddies
Canon 70-200 2.8 vii
Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2
Tokina 11-20 2.8 (selling)
Canon 24-105 F/4 (selling)
Sigma 18-300 (selling)


Looking to replace my wide angle which I use for landscape and astrophotography.

Looking for a long zoom 400-600mm range for wildlife.

For the wide angle I want F/2.8 or faster prefer 14mm but willing to sacrifice 2mm or so for speed and optics. I don't mind manual focus or manual aperture on this lens.

Thinking Samyang 16mm 2.8 or Tamron 15-30 2.8 but not sure what others to consider. What other options are available?

For the long end, a 2x extender with my 70-200 seems like an option but I know AF speeds slow and IQ will take a hit and not sure I am ok with that sacrafice. Tamron 150-600 G2 is another option as is a used Canon 100-400. Any other thoughts here apreciated.

I don't know if this will help, but I rented the Tamron 150-600 last winter for some bird photography. Very sharp, the IS was good, but it's a heavy bugger, and I thought if I rented anything again for the birds, it would be a Canon prime lens with a wider aperture, partly for the weight saving and partly because it's cheaper to rent. Most of my shots were out at the long end - 500 to 600 mm anyway, so the shorter end of the zoom wasn't used very much. Also, since I was trying to track birds, I was mostly hand holding the camera and the weight did make that a little difficult.

(I'm more of a landscape guy, and I can also add that the longer zoom really isn't in the least useful for landscapes, I tried it for a few landscape shots just because I had it, but didn't like the results)

I am in love with my Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 and have never thought about cheating! I don't mind the 14mm Rokinon as well but it is not quite as sharp to the edges. I have also had the opportunity to spend some time with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS ii and am currently saving for it. As good as your 70-200 is, I would seriously think about the 100-400 as it has amazing IS and the pictures are super sharp, and it is also great for macro. Keep the 24-70 but maybe think about an 85mm prime and finish it off with the 100-400 with a tele and you would be at your 600mm mark you were looking for.

I can't say I have a problem with my Sigma 150-600C and I've used it for motorsports with no issues. Unless you want to spend $6k for a used Canon IS V1, either the Tamron V2 or the Sigma will be your choices for the longer end.

Can't help on the shorter end as I'm still using my 24-105.

I have a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 I will be selling for $300. I just don't use it, and I also have the Sigma 8-16 in the bag. It is a great 16mm f2.8 prime on the FF, as well as great use on the APS-C. It might be something to consider when you are looking at wide fast options.

The Sigma 150-600 contemporary probably fits your telephoto need, but you can also use a 1.4x II TC on the 100-400II (not the MKI) to get very close to 600mm, with nearly the same IQ. The problem is that the latter option is well over twice the cost of the first option.

Consider your next body. If you have a 5DS or 5DSR in mind and plan to buy an 16-35mm ... get the f/4

I understand the mk ii f/2.8 isn't the best fit.

I am leaning towards the Sigma 14mm 1.8 for the wide. The two draw backs, price and a complete filter system.

If I get my 3 lenses sold, then I could consider it.


The Irix 15mm seems like a good option as well. Not as fast or wide, but total cost with filters will be half or less than just the Sigma.

I will likely hold off on the tele a bit.

Why do you need a "fast" wide angle lens for landscapes? I have the 16-35 F/4 for landscape and love it. Image quality is outstanding.

A 14mm lens should allow for 35 seconds of exposure time with out signs of trails.

With a 1.8 aperture I bet ISO can come way down in to the 400-800 range providing much less noise.


For day landscape you are correct, a 1.8 is not needed.

Hey, thanks for posting this. I just mounted my Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 on my 6D. It works! Vignettes horribly from 11-15, but no mirror interference. I just added a full frame 16-20mm f/2.8 zoom to my arsenal.

The Sigma has gotten some really good reviews for astro work, but in your position I think I would get a Samyang/Rokinon 14mm and put the money saved toward a tracking mount. In the end I think it would give you more options if astro is something you want to shoot regularly.

Lower ISO doesn't mean better when it comes to astro. It would actually not be ideal to shoot your cameras at ISO 400. I would n't go less than ISO 800, and actually probably keep it closer to ISO 1600 on your cameras for long exposure astro. To understand why, head over to ClarkVision.

Once you get into this and understand it, you'll find F4 is totally fine for your needs at that focal length. And the 16-35 F4L IS becomes a great option to cover a lot of your needs.
