I bought my family a point in shot that is waterproof and shockproof etc. my uses it to take snapshots. My youngest can't destroy it. My middle child likes to use it for macro and the whole family loves to use it in or underwater. It addds new capabilities for me and the whole family enjoys it.

I would not recommend Sony cameras for the novice/casual photographer. Sony is menu hell. My wife (who isn't a camera noob) uses my a6500 from time-to-time (which has the "improved" menu over the previous models) and even its menu has caused headaches. Not the sort of thing she needs to deal with when she's on the move and taking time-critical photos.
