Lightroom 6

Lightroom 6 is the last standalone version of Lightroom that can be purchased outside of a Creative Cloud membership. There will not be a Lightroom 7 perpetual offering. Lightroom 6 will remain for sale for an undetermined amount of time, but will no longer be updated with camera support or bug fixes after the end of 2017. Lightroom 6.13 with support for the Nikon D850 will be released on October 26, 2017.

That's really too bad. I upgraded from LR4-5-6. That means I spent $60 a few years back and have had LR all this time without another monthly bill.

I read LR6 stand alone will get one last 'big' update at the end of October. If it just rolls in some of the performance tweaks that the 'new' LRCC got I'd be a happy camper.

I have LR6 stand alone and paid $90 here in Canada. I've had it for 3 years with no problems. That's too bad.

Time to switch software! I am playing with the thought of trying capture one for quite a while - this seems to be a good motivation!

LR6 should work for everyone for some time after the latest update.

You'll be put in the position of upgrading to subscription or switching apps when you buy a new camera released in 2018 or later.

It's unfortunate for many of us, especially for those who don't use PS (like me).

I'm still on LR 5.7. It is doing everything that I need for now. When the time comes that I need support for a new camera or whatever, not sure what I will do. But there seem to alternatives that are worth looking at.

There are both inexpensive and holy smokes ones. I was really impressed with Capture One For but they don't give it away.

The trigger for me will be purchase of a new camera body. It's time I did that!! But haven't for the last couple years. And it might be another year... (waiting for 7D III or SL3 or Sony RX100 VI or maybe a new m43). So by the time that happens, LR 6.13 won't do it for me.

Adobe is taking advantage of the fact that the average person cares little about 'spending $10 every month for life', as they fail to realize the fact that that doing so is

  1. $600 over 5 years
  2. $1200 over 10 years
  3. $6000 sent to Adobe over a lifetime (20yo to 70 yo)

and that if you could get 4% annual interest (which -- before the Great Recession -- was a common passbook savings interest rate from a bank), compounded even monthly (rather than typical daily compounding), you could have accumulated over $16000 in lost money at the end of 50 years, when not spent under a monthly subscription model!
So much for, "It's only $10 per month"

But that is a snivelling amount compared to not spending $3 per weekday on a cup of coffee at Starbucks...over $59000 at the end of 40 years.
So much for, "It's only $3 per day":

I talked to my computer "guy" about the subscription model. It isn't like Adobe is the only one doing it. The main reason? pirated software, at least, according to him. I know a lot of people who would never steal from a store, another person, etc. but who have no problem using a hacked Amazon fire stick or software program. I have upset a few friends who come over and see all my music CD's (I have over 1200) and ask me to burn them a copy of this or that album. I have to explain to them I don't do that because I want my favorite music artists to be paid for their work. They often just roll their eyes, muttering something under their breath. ;)

I got a new computer a few months ago. I was dreading loading all the software because I hadn't done it in 4 years. I had forgotten.... I no longer had any software on CD's. It only took me about a half an hour to get everything loaded because almost everything is subscription now. I missed a loading a few programs until the need arose. Took me a few minutes and there they were.

It's well known that subscriptions make companies rich. Phone companies especially have worked that formula to their benefit. For software, so far I'm not biting.

Capture One Pro offers both stand alone and subscription.

No, the main reason is not pirated software, the main reason is a continual guaranteed revenue stream. It's a lucrative model, and is being adopted by numerous industries.

Personally, I will be looking for an alternative to Lightroom, which I have been using for many years. I did not upgrade to LR6, but was planning on upgrading to LR7 when it came out. Since Adobe has decided not to sell LR7, I will have to move on. The subscription model is not attractive to me.

Cool.

I've been using Lightroom and Photoshop for a few years now.... well, truth be told, mostly Lightroom in combination with the Nik Suite.

A few days ago, someone sort of warned me about converting all my RAW files to .dng. I took their advice seriously. Who knows, I might end up with Capture One Pro some day.

So... stupid question: can Capture One Pro read my .dng files or are they Adobe proprietary files?

I read a few books on Lightroom and Photoshop when I first got into it. All of them, without exception, suggested converting everything to .dng, including the authors who didn't work for Adobe directly. I was too naive to read between the lines. Of course, they'd all make the recommendation. At the time, I knew they knew more than I did so I just blindly followed their suggestions for my initial set-ups.

So, what do most of you do? Upload the CR2 files and then work on them?
