POTN is probably the most active photography forum outside of Facebook. I am wondering how young everyone is.

Right now I'm the oldest I've ever been.

What is the goal of the poll? I see this same post on a few boards now and was curious.

Looks like we need to get the younger crowd into this hobby. Then maybe have a few turn into pros to replace us old fogies.

These early results suggest that young people hang out elsewhere.

Maybe they'll be more responsive when the Sunday morning hangover wears off.

...that might reflect upon why this photography board is so CIVIL in discussions!
The (teen) folks who can now afford to buy 10 year old BMWs on another board bash each other frequently on another forum.

Then stand back for the flame wars, until they get kicked off.

Yup. . And I find this very surprising. .

I just assumed that most folks here were younger than me.......like, in their 30's. . I never imagined that at 49 years of age I would be on the younger end of the demographic. . I think the reason this is surprising to me is because the people that are older than me that I know "in real life" are not comfortable using computers, and do not go online. . I thought that's how it was for most older folks everywhere. .

Of all my friends, family, and acquaintances, only those younger than myself are active on the internet (with only very few exceptions). . So it seems odd that so many here on POTN would be older than myself, because it just doesn't jive at all with my real-life experiences.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Younger people prefer other kinds of social media, not forums.

Why no choice for those born before 1901?

The age distribution might be reflective of WHEN each of us got interested in photography and the use of SLRs...most of the younger folks who grew up with smartphones with decent cameras have found no NEED and no DESIRE to carry about a big bulky dSLR now.
I recall about 9 years ago, our oldest daughter complained about the lag in her smartphone, so we got her a compact (and NOT BULKY) digital P&S that was very responsive and with a good MP count for Xmas. She used it for about 1 year (before dropping it and irrepairably damaging it) so we got her a refurb replacement. Now she NEVER uses it, it is her smartphone only that she takes photos with, because it is too much of a bother to carry around even a very compact P&S in addition to the smartphone.
(Earlier this year she handed her phone to someone to have them shoot a picture of her with her two kids; the person dropped it and broke the phone, and even with Verizon insurance coverage it cost her $150 to replace...so much for the good ergonomics of smartphones as cameras!)
