These early results suggest that young people hang out elsewhere.

Younger people prefer other kinds of social media, not forums.

Exactly.

I never imagined that at 49 years of age I would be on the younger end of the demographic. . I think the reason this is surprising to me is because the people that are older than me that I know "in real life" are not comfortable using computers, and do not go online.

I think Internet use is more common in big cities. Omak is a small town, right? I'd never heard of it before.

People who work at something not strictly local may well need computers and connectivity. My freelance work would be severely impaired without e-mail and the use of the Web as a kind of reference library.

The age distribution might be reflective of WHEN each of us got interested in photography and the use of SLRs...most of the younger folks who grew up with smartphones with decent cameras have found no NEED and no DESIRE to carry about a big bulky dSLR now.

I carry a somewhat bulky advanced P&S and would like it to be smaller.

The assumptions that people make by age . . . We recently had a plumber in to attend to the kitchen faucet. He did what he could and then suggested that if the volume of flow still seemed below par, we might photograph the stream of water and take the picture to the dealership where the faucet came from. He said "Do you have a phone with a camera?" I said "No. We have a real camera."

Why no choice for those born before 1901?

It's all right, JJ, just push the button next to 1901-1924 and the rest of us will understand that your response was approximate.

But what about the vampires among us. Some of them can be quite old.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Pffft. Kids.

I'm 75. Got my first personal computer in 1978. Programmed my first computer in 1962 (it used vacuum tubes (look it up, kids)).

Most would consider Omak a small town. . We have 4,500 people living here. . But around here that is actually a big town - it is, by far, the largest town anywhere within almost a 100 mile radius!

You are right; many people here use computers & the internet for their jobs. . However, I don't see people older than myself using a computer for their job. . When I go to the bank, the employees are all younger than me. . When I go to pay my electric bill, telephone bill, city utility bill, storage unit bill, or internet bill, the people who take my money and enter the payment into the computer are all in their 20's, 30's, or early 40's.

My friends and friends of friends - most of the ones my age and younger use computers, but those who are older than I am are very uncomfortable with computers, and either never use them at all (and don't even have cellphones), or use them very sparingly. . This is pretty much true "to a man", as the saying goes.

Tom, you're 49 yet "those who are older than I am are very uncomfortable with computers, and either never use them at all (and don't even have cellphones), or use them very sparingly"???

Maybe that is related only to the fact you are out in the rural area where 4500 in town is a population boom!

I have a group of photography friends with whom I routinely correspond via email, and many of THEM are in their late 70's and 80's, and have cellphones. Only one lady in the group does not have DSL, but still relies upon a modem connection because she is way out in rural PA and cannot get faster service lines to her location.

My wife is 74.995 years of age. She works two jobs because her employers desperately need her computer skills. She's expert at spreadsheets and Quickbooks. Her hobby is genealogy and she spends lots of time researching on the intertubes.

I have a number of friends my age who are skilled and experienced computer users.

Methinks you need to get out and around a bit. ;-)a

Oh, trust me, I do get out and around quite a bit. . Those who know me can attest to this.

I road-trip across the country on a regular basis, and have many friends in many states that I meet up with along the way. . I am an active member of the Wenatchee Photographic Association, which meets in Wenatchee, 100 miles from my home, and have gotten to know several of the other members quite well. . . I am from Pennsylvania, and still keep in touch with many friends and family who are back there. . When visiting in PA, I go back to my old photography club and re-connect with friends that I made there.

Here in my town, I am very active in my church, work with dozens of families every month via my employment at the local funeral home, am a part of the extensive homeless shelter ministry, am an active member and contributor at the regional art gallery, am an active member of the Okanogan County Artists Association, am a regular at Friday Game Night, and I've taught the after school photography program at the local high school and keep in touch with the folks that I got to know during my time there.

I spend a month or so in western Montana every year, and have gotten to know many people in the community where I live when I am there. . I'll be in South Dakota next week and then in Colorado for the month of November. . While in Colorado, one friend from Pennsylvania will be visiting me, and three friends from coastal Washington will be visiting me.

Furthermore, I am a wildland firefighter. . This summer I spent 15 days on a fire in central Idaho, 23 days on a fire in coastal Oregon, 7 days on a fire in the Columbia Gorge, and 7 days on a fire near Mount Rainier. . On fires we work with many other people from many different walks of life, as it is an enormous team effort and requires people of sundry skillsets. . So I get to know a lot of different people while working on fires.

For you to suggest that I need to get out more, well, that seems preposterous, given my lifestyle and outgoing nature.

.

I'm 60. I have been programming since the mid-70s (1970s), still write code, crunch lots of data (mmm, data good!), craft algorithms, and am looking at retirement in the not-too-distant future. In preparation for "retirement", I'm working to create a fashion photography business in the DC suburbs, photographing bright and beautiful young women as time permits. I use Lr, Ps, iMovie (yes I do video, sometimes running multiple cameras simultaneously), and have a system with 14TB of disk space all connected (some of the drives are backups).

I'm not dead yet, at least as far as I know. An organization to which I belong sends a monthly magazine. My name isn't in the obituaries yet. ;-)a
