Oh, trust me, I do get out and around quite a bit. . Those who know me can attest to this.

I road-trip across the country on a regular basis, and have many friends in many states that I meet up with along the way. . I am an active member of the Wenatchee Photographic Association, which meets in Wenatchee, 100 miles from my home, and have gotten to know several of the other members quite well. . . I am from Pennsylvania, and still keep in touch with many friends and family who are back there. . When visiting in PA, I go back to my old photography club and re-connect with friends that I made there.

Here in my town, I am very active in my church, work with dozens of families every month via my employment at the local funeral home, am a part of the extensive homeless shelter ministry, am an active member and contributor at the regional art gallery, am an active member of the Okanogan County Artists Association, am a regular at Friday Game Night, and I've taught the after school photography program at the local high school and keep in touch with the folks that I got to know during my time there.

I spend a month or so in western Montana every year, and have gotten to know many people in the community where I live when I am there. . I'll be in South Dakota next week and then in Colorado for the month of November. . While in Colorado, one friend from Pennsylvania will be visiting me, and three friends from coastal Washington will be visiting me.

Furthermore, I am a wildland firefighter. . This summer I spent 15 days on a fire in central Idaho, 23 days on a fire in coastal Oregon, 7 days on a fire in the Columbia Gorge, and 7 days on a fire near Mount Rainier. . On fires we work with many other people from many different walks of life, as it is an enormous team effort and requires people of sundry skillsets. . So I get to know a lot of different people while working on fires.

For you to suggest that I need to get out more, well, that seems preposterous, given my lifestyle and outgoing nature.

.

I don't think it is to do with age at all ... but it may be a little to do with where you live, the kind of place that it is.

I am way, way, way older than you but computers are right bang in the middle of a very big chunk of what I do. I made up my mind 30 years ago that if I wanted to keep up with a changing world, I was going to need to stay computer literate and keep up with whatever that would throw at me. There is a million miles of stuff that I don't know ... but I have a good base-level understanding and I am totally confident that I can quickly learn and apply whatever there is that is new but I don't yet hold within my compass.

Computers are easy. People ... not so much.

Tom, check the emoji in my post. It's a wink, signifying a friendly, humorous dig. No offense intended.

Oh, I get it now - it's sarcasm. . I've never been much good at recognizing sarcasm, and don't like it, or use it myself, so that's why I took your "dig" so seriously.

Offense not taken, now that I know the spirit in which you made that comment.

I think it certainly does have to do with where I live. . I don't think that anybody here in my rural community is concerned with keeping up with a changing world - they much prefer to remain the same despite the fact that the world is changing. . And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I do travel a heck of a lot, but most of the places I travel to are rather remote rural areas with little human population, and the mindset always seems to be the same as it is here in my community. . I really hate cities and suburbs - spent the first 38 years of my life in them and never ever want to live near a population center ever again - I hate the way things are there. . So if that's where the older computer-savvy crowd resides, I will probably not run in to them very often as I prefer to never be in such areas. . It's yucky there. . Always people around - wherever you go, there are people. . Sheesh!

It isn't exactly sarcasm; it's more like throwing a mock punch that isn't intended to land. Sarcasm occurs when a statement clearly means the opposite of what it says. A common example is "Big deal!"

My post is nitpicky and irrelevant to the emotional issue, I know. I'm putting it up anyway because I've noticed that you, Tom, appreciate precision in use of language. You might find it interesting.

Other than preferring smartphones I think another reason why there are fewer 1980-2017 is because mirrorless and dSLR is cost prohibitive for young people.

hmmmmm Our two sons were born in 1979 and 1980 respectively. Both are active photographers... the younger one has both DSLR's and mirrorless cameras. I guess it depends.

All generalizations are false, including this one.

They might

* be serious photographers
* prioritize photography in their expenses
* have disposable income
* be deriving primary or secondary income from photograpy

Well of course they are. . But that doesn't in any way make Phoenixkh's point less valid.

For new gear there MAY be some element of truth in the statement, but even a new T6i would cost $750 with lens at BestBuy, or $580 refurb thru Canon.
And then there is the used market, and a used 60D is $400-450 with lens.

I think the poll might have been 'biased ' from the beginning due to mere demographics ..if you merely poll the general population, the Gausian distribution puts the natural peak in the Baby Boomer category!
And then the yougest category, from 0-18 years?! Just how many teens do you expect to have established themselves firmly as a hobby and having SLRs?! I recall in high school the guys in my year who were photography afficianados...about 1-2% of my year!

You need to give me OK to edit your image and repost! Keep POTN alive and well with member support https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php

The poll wouldn't be complete if it excluded any age range, and neither having an SLR nor being firmly established is required at POTN.
