How young is everyone?

I'm in my 60's. I not only use computers, but program them.

Speaking from my own experience, I was interested in photography at an early age, but could not get serious about it until my 20's due to the cost. These days, younger folk are satisfied with their smartphone cameras, which are much better than anything I had when I was their age. This forum is for those who are serious about photography and want to improve. That takes time and maturity and it's not for everybody. The ones who gravitate to this forum will not be those who count "likes" on Instagram and Facebook. They'll be the ones who look critically at their photos and wonder how they could be better.

And then there is the used market, and a used 60D is $400-450 with lens.

I think the poll might have been 'biased ' from the beginning due to mere demographics ..if you merely poll the general population, the Gausian distribution puts the natural peak in the Baby Boomer category!
And then the yougest category, from 0-18 years?! Just how many teens do you expect to have established themselves firmly as a hobby and having SLRs?! I recall in high school the guys in my year who were photography afficianados...about 1-2% of my year!

The categories are grouped into generations.

G.I. Gen 1901-1924 means from 116 years old down to 93 years old

Silent Gen 1925-1942 means from 92 years old to 75 years old

Baby Boomer 1943-1960 means from 74 years old to 57 years old

Gen X 1961-1979 means from 56 years old to 38 years old

Millennial 1980-1998 means from 37 years old to 19 years old

Gen Z - 1999-2017 means from 18 years old to 0 years old

And to people 37-19 and 18-0 who shoot casually spending more than the price mentioned for a gadget that is limited to recording stills and video is a tough sell. If they could get more utility from it then they may go for it.

In the US headlines I keep reading that millenials and gen z suffer from student loans.

That would do, too, but I think dolina's existing poll is realistic and practical; its great advantage is that we already have it.

There actually are a few whiz kids under age 12 who take amazing pictures, using an intuitive understanding of framing, color, and so forth. I'd treat the first category like the last one. Make it "Under 31."
