Personally I will go with Macphun products or On1 Photo Raw.

There’s no real difference.

LR classic is what you were using before.
The other one is a renamed Lightroom Mobile.

Why would you move on?

I fine with it, nothing has changed. I can still use lightroom [classic CC] as I always have used lightroom, no need to upload your files or anything like that.

For those already paying the monthly subscription for LR CC, the next version of LR is simply 'new features'.

For those who have been using LR on a one-time license fee, the new LR means accepting a mandatory $120 fee, spread over monthly payments. It is this group who are faced with a change decision, but only when they buy a newer model camera which is not supported on their current (old) version of LR.

I bought LR v5 and it is serving me well. I don't use Photoshop at all and have no plans to start.

I'll just keep using my current LR until I get a new body that it does't support. Then it will be decision time. Convert raws to DNG for import to LR? Shoot JPGs? Subscribe for $120/yr to get a product that previously cost me less than $120 for perpetual use? Maybe I will move to Affinity or Capture One... don't know yet.

LR going subscription only is a non-event for subscribers using both LR and PS, but it is a problem for those who only use LR.

I'll use LR 6 until I buy a camera it doesn't support. In the meantime, I am working a lot more with DPP. Adobe isn't getting any more of my money. Oh, BTW, I tried DNG when I first bought my 80D. I predict exactly nobody will use that for long. It is a Rube Goldberg exercise. I'd rather have one thing that works.

Any experience transitioning from LR to Capture One? ... or other program like Affinity? Are any changes needed to the folders containing the raw files? Can any metadata be transferred? I guess all LR edits will be lost... so does one keep the current LR alongside the new program, with the new prog getting just new raw files?

For those of us with a perpetual license, things have indeed changed. Adobe just more than quadrupled the price for us to use Lightroom by forcing a subscription model when we need to upgrade. I will not move to their subscription model, so will need to find an alternative at some point.

I upgrade Lightroom on average about every three years at a cost of around $80. Now Adobe wants me to pay them $360 over that same time period for the same software.

Stick. It's s good product at a fair price that includes PhotoShop.

Now if the price goes up.....

Yes, that has been mentioned a lot above alright, annoying for those who just use Lr but with the photography subscription you also get Photoshop. That is where the value is as I remember Ps being about £700 to buy. I bought Master suite CS3 at the time it cost £3200, well work paid but still....

Capture one is a very good alternative, probably better, but you might find the price not as attractive if you plan on upgrading every few years at $299 plus you'll need Media one if you use Lr to manage your image locations etc... that adds about 180 to the ticket.

Ahh yes! but here lies the problem. Nothing changed when the permanent license went to subscription either, except.......

With the new Cloud solution all development dollars will go to the cloud solution and the "Classic" will be held back until we have no choice but to go to the cloud and store our photos on the cloud at the price they wish to charge. Yes we are being led like cows to the slaughter.

I too am seriously considering a change in my workflow and what products I will use.

Almost. The cows don't have much choice in the matter. I can go back to DPP in a second; I keep both versions updated, just in case. I can even consider other options, though I couldn't even name one right now.

Moving on.

I am on 5.7 now and no way am I going to go for their sleazy subscription cash grab . It also means that bug fixes and improvements will come even slower than the snails pace they were before.

Just a matter of figuring out what software to shift too.
