Totally depends of the distance between you and the subject (the group). So I shoot group photo's with the 16-35L IS, Sigma 35 or the 70-200LII

Oct 25, 2017 20:14 | #20 Shooting on my 80D or M6 I'll use the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 with or without flash when indoors in close proximity or the Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 outdoors. When I need even more flexibility the Canon 18-135mm IS STM works well. PhotographicMemoriesCT.com

Oct 25, 2017 20:20 | #21 It's usually the 18-55mm STM with flash for parties at home. For family portraits I use the 40mm on 5D3. I like them nice and light.

Phoenixkh a mere speck More info | Oct 25, 2017 22:26 | #23 I'm just learning to take decent photos of people in addition to my usual wildlife photographs (mostly birds). So far, I am enjoying the 70-200 f/2.8 ll... we do most of our photography outside so it seems to work for me. I used it on a 1D IV a few weeks ago at a beach wedding with pretty decent results. But you know what, I would have go many more with a 70-200, it's gotta be a zoom when you're talking families, they're all over the place..... Nov 18, 2017 07:11 | #30 Mine used to be a 50L for the Canon side of things. I find myself more drawn to the 35mm view of life so I sold the 50 intending to move toward a 35/85 combo, but the AF threw a wrench into my plan by forcing a move so I haven’t had a chance to pick up a new lens/lenses yet.
