Lately, after taking a shot/s, when I attempt to then view the image in camera, it will sometimes not display properly. It's giving me a dull, washed out display. If I close the image then re-view, it displays full brightness and I can scroll through, magnify, etc, no problem. This happens right after capture (when the image displays for an instant), it will continue to be dull when I hit the view button. Only after I attempt to view it a second time will it correct itself. Battery is not low. Not specific to the card either. Is my display failing? Anyone else experienced this? Right now it's just a minor nuisance. Hoping it won't get worse.

My 7D does the same. On that camera, it's due to the automatic brightness adjustment of the rear LCD. When I take the photo, my face covers the ambient light sensor, so when the display goes on, it does so assuming it's pretty dark outside. When you later press the play button to review the image, you typically have the camera with the rear side facing the sky, and the sensor sees a much brighter surrounding. Then you get a bright picture.

Now assuming the 5D Mark III has the same feature, then if you don't like this, either turn off automatic rear LCD brightness, or turn off automatic image review.

Makes sense. I hope that's what's going on and not a malfunction. Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking, this sounds bad. But one of the first things I do when I get a camera is turn off the automatic brightness. If I'm going to chimp then I at least need the screen to be consistent.

Well, yes or no. The screen will be consistent, by reference to itself, if you turn off automatic brightness control. But to your eye, it will seem brighter when it gets darker around you. So you may actually fool yourself more if you have automatic brightness off.
The issue in this particular case, in this thread, is just that the reference soon changes, when you take the camera down from your eye, but to keep the screen consistent, brightness doesn't change while it's lit, just when it's lit.

For me the brightness change has only been an issue between say a bright sunny day, to very cloudy and gloomy to indoors. I basically have 3 settings that I use for those conditions. On the odd occasion that I am outdoors and the light is changing from super-bright to big thunderstorms, then I use the histogram more, but even that change is relatively slow although it can be 5-20 minutes in the mountains. But from bright sun to shade, I personally don't have a problem. Likely my brain compensates or I am shading the LCD anyway, where as if the screen is automatically changing and I have no idea what its current setting is, then I get more confused.

I opted to leave automatic brightness on but turn automatic image review off. I don't need to chimp every shot I take and the image is often displayed while the camera is still up to my face so I can't see it anyway. turning auto image review off saves on battery too.
