Sony a7R III

I just realized how the auto iso on the sony is limited to 12,800. That really stinks for me since I have my 5D4 setup for 32,000 and I let it do whatever it wants. Considering the sony is a bit better in those areas they should allow that increase.

Just checked my a7rii and it goes up to 102400 on auto iso

Huh... ok well must be something wrong in their documentation or they increased it via firmware or something.

No probs Talley. I’ll check the 7riii when it arrives on Tuesday and let you know. I would be surprised if they crippled the feature but it is Sony and they make odd decisions sometimes

Is the a7R III a suitable camera for sports or action photography? In my case it would be for aviation photography.

I just don't know how a 42mp camera would work on fast moving subjects. Especially when panning.
I use my Canon gear to shoot small aerobatic planes that are high in the sky. Lately I've been using 560mm or 600mm lenses.

My thinking is 42mp would allow for a lot of cropping, and I could get by with a shorter FL lens. For example, the new Sony 100-400.

Any opinions?

Do you shoot large bursts? Your question was based more on focal length of lens, not on speed of camera. Based on specifications, including burst (20 fps), AF coverage, and buffer capacity (more due to smaller image size), I believe that the A9 might be better suited for sports/action photography, specifically aviation. Sony designed the A9 for the action photographer, while the A7RIII is geared more toward landscape shooters. Granted, any of the cameras can be used for any purpose, but the specs are such that each has a better design for certain situations. At 24mp, the A9 is not going to be great for cropping though. My plan for the next airshow here is to rent the A9 and use my Sony 100-400 with the 1.4x teleconverter. That puts me at effectively 600mm at the long end.

Landscape photographers don’t need 10 fps. Landscape photographers don’t need advanced AF systems. That’s all the specification evidence we need to know that the a7R III hasn’t been “geared” for landscape photography. The a7R III appears reasonably well geared for any sort of photography where high resolution is prioritized, including action photography.

The biggest shortcoming is going to be the buffer. 10fps @ 42MP uncompressed raw files will quickly fill the buffer and take a while to clear.

The a9 is indisputably the top of the range for action. And the 100-400 GM is so sharp and does so well with extenders - even the 2x - that it certainly merits consideration.

The only times I shoot large bursts are when two or more aircraft are crossing over one another (ex. Blue Angels crossing).
With my 1D4 (10 fps) I may hold the shutter button down for 2 or 3 sec. For "regular" aviation shooting I'll drop the fps rate
down to 3 fps. I only shoot raw.

The Sony 100-400 sure looks attractive. Will be interesting to see how it plays with a 1.4x tele.

Perhaps this summer I can rent the A7R III and a9.

The big question is if the Sony gear will offer a benefit over my Canon.

The buffer is fast as long as you turn your photo previews off. You will see what you get in the EVF so you don't need to preview. I'm using the sandisk extreme (not pro) and i'm holding it down 3-5 second bursts while I'm in an aircraft and never had a problem. Youtube has many buffer videos on this camera. The cropping power is a great plus. I'm shooting compressed RAW @ 42MP.
