Looks to me like you just need better light and GET CLOSER to those small birds.

This is with the 1.4 and the lens looks pretty sharp here.

Well one reason I bought this camera is the great low light performance it is said to possess. I agree on the get closer.

Yes, but even with good low light performance you still need to make sure your light source is directly hitting on the bird and that the background light is not brighter than that.

Agreed but I've been able to cheat it abit using Canon but we're also talking 20-24 mp in the Canon bodies.

if you have you're older body still, I think you should do a proper test.

On a tripod, I've found the older 6D to be noticeably inferior when files compared to the Sony. I tested simply on a tripod, the 70-200mkii, and an electric pole far way.

Focused wide open, stopped down to f8, the Canon was much softer, when equalized in size. This type of testing will get rid of the guesswork.

My impression is that testing with long lenses becomes increasingly difficult when hard crops and live subjects are involved.

Yes and thanks again for sending them. I want to replicate the settings to see what happens.

Eddie thanks for giving me something to compare to. Thanks to all that answered questions and offered suggestions. Talley these were with the FE 100-400. I removed the 1.4 x for these.

I took these a little while ago. I started at ISO 100 and ended at 3200 in the sun and 6400 in the shadows of the porch. I think I'm good. I did learn something from this which is 0 the sharpening Lightroom and the fact that this noise has to be dealt with differently due to the 42 mp the camera puts out. Anyway a shot in the sun, 3200 and shot in the shadows/shade, 6400. I did nothing to these except resize for posting here.

Is there a thread here anywhere (I can't find one) that speaks to using an adapted Tamron or Sigma 150-600 with the RIII? I just purchased a Tammy G2 and put it on and it works great except for the noise it makes and doesn't stop without turning off the camera. I would like to read the experiences of others. Thanks

On my screen Bill, I'm honestly not seeing objectionable noise. On the finch image I barely see any noise in the green area, and none on the bird...certainly not objectionable.

Thanks Mike. Actually I'm talking about noise from the lens or camera, not sure which. Like a motor running.

Ahhhhhhh...sorry about that, I had it all wrong. I'm not hearing any noise from your lens  and I'm sure not seeing any objectionable noise on my screen.
