1. Is the idea behind the eye detect AF that it will automatically find the eyes on a subject and always focus sharp? If so, is this a new feature to the Sony cameras or has it been available on other models? How effective is it? If doing portraits, do you even need to move a focus box around to identify the focus area?

2. Does the A7R3 share the same lenses as the A7SII?

Thanks.

Yes they share lenses ..eye af works very well in existing cameras .. hear it works even better in a9 and a7riii

Eye AF is also on the a7rii, a9, a6x00 etc. Basically you press the button for it (custom button programmable) and it recognises the eye and locks on. You don’t have to align a focus box with the eye. You can also move the camera about whilst it’s locked (or the person can move) and the focus box will stay on the eye. It’s decent on the a7rii (loses the eye sometimes if movement fast) and from what I gather it’s amazing on the a9 and locks on quick and stays locked. Time will tell how good the a7riii version is. Eye af allows you to shoot at wide apertures and concentrate on framing as opposed to concentrating on keeping the focus box on the eye

For your second question all of the Sony cameras share the same mount (E mount). Full frame lenses are designated FE (full frame E mount) and crop lenses are just E but they are all the same mount. Crop lenses can be used in the full frame bodies in crop mode

Understanding that it has not been released yet, on paper, how do the specs of the the A7R3 compare in terms of image and video quality with the 5DM4? Dynamic range, color, etc. I'm not technical enough to know what to look for.

Thanks.

I believe Fuji also has eye detect. Watching some of the youtubes showcasing the A9 EDF, it looks to be quite accurate.

They actually listened to their customers desires for dual card, better battery life and faster fps.

This will be the camera that pro users will cross over to.

It would be hard to justify spending 2 grand on a 6d2 or 3 grand on the 5dm4 with specs that can't even beat the sonys from several years ago.

Be happy with what you have ! You can still create great imagery with older bodies. Glass and knowledge is way more important.

The a7rii has one of the best sensors on the market and I believe it’s agead of the 5D4 in terms of dynamic range etc. The a7riii has the same megapixel sensor but may be optimised even more

Fuji does, it’s on my X100F , but it’s not continuous focus it’s only single shot. Sony eye AF is in continuous focus mode so the camera and/or subject can move

Having had both systems as well.. my opinion is the sonys eye af is usable in an actual system.. where as with fuji its just easier to use single point af

I'll put that one beside "It doesn't matter if you win or lose but how you play the game." It's what all losing coaches tell their players. :)

What's with the eyes. After a closer look its not a camera artifact but actually contact lenses.

Granted im using a 6d and you dont have many af points to choose from and i normally dont have any major problem acquiring focus but the limited af points severely limit the composition of the picture. The sony locks onto the persons eye and you frame the way you want. The af stays wherever the eye is.

Secondly, i know how to use my camera. I can change focus points fairly quick but my girlfriend doesnt, at least not very good. And sometimes i want some pictures of my myself too. More than a few times i will set up the camera for her, tell her that the red dot is where it will focus only to have to redo that series of pictures because she is taking pictures based on what looks best composition wise rather than getting the red dot exactly on my eye.

This is such a time saver!

You are on vacation or out with your gf wife loved one etc and rather than taking a tripod and setting it up all manually or giving the camera to someone and then explaining how to focus only to find out that most of the pictures they took are out of focus. I now just set the camera up hand it over to whoever is taking the picture and im left with memories that arent blurry :). Have fun doing that using a canon camera.

The strange thing is i first heard about this many years ago when i joined this site and people were asking why canon doesnt bring back eye detect af. So i assume this was a feature that over a decade ago canon already began using but stopped.

How does the eye detect focus work when shooting video? Can you keep the lens in auto, and shoot footage of a slow moving subject with the focal points maintaining focus on the eyes without the lens trying to shift focus to some other subject in the composition?

Does the eye detect AF also work with dogs?

no for video, although it does face detect. Nogo for animals, but I suppose the general intelligent tracking might be able to work it out (lock on AF).
