Canon sent me an estimate to repair my 70-200 IS II f2.8 from a two foot fall. The first estimate was $655 which was for the focusing ring and IS repair, check resolution, AF accuracy and calibrate with camera. Today they hit me with a new estimate of $1284!!! It said a screw broke off in cam barrel and the main cam barrel is needed for repair. I paid $1900 new for it a few years ago and I'm seeing them go used from $1400-1500. Is it worth the repair or should I invest in a used or new one?

Any news on Sigma releasing their new 70-200mm?

Sounds like you could buy a good used one and sell the old one for parts and come out a little better than the repair cost. I'm not sure what I would do though.

What does a parts lens go for?

Push them. I'm suspecting that they broke the screw while dissembling it. Maybe if you call them on it, they might cut that charge.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Two ft fall and the lens suffered an over $1k damage??? Guess Canon L lens don't make them like they used to. You can get the Tamron 70-200 vc G2 or version 2 for about $1300 with a 6 year warranty...

I'd buy a used one and sell the broken one for parts. Since it's a current lens, someone will buy it for parts, and either get it repaired or use it for repairs, etc. At least you don't lose as much.

I take you don't have insurance.

Very best,

That's what I'm thinking. I'm a wheelchair user and it was on my lap when I went to unlock the door. I saw it starting to slide but I could only grab the neck strap before it hit the wood porch. When it hit my lens started making funky noises.

No insurance but after this I've started looking into it.

they have refurbs for $1427, comes with a 1 year warranty...

based off of ebay completed listings, i'd say getting 400-500 isn't to much of a stretch...

so say you're getting a refurb for $1,000 instead of repairing the lens for nearly $1300...or buy used and save even more money

The new Canon 70-200 is to be here today. Great timing on my lens to go bad as Adorama had a sale, $1709. Now for Canon to send my camera and lens back.
