Update: Macphun has now followed through and I have my money back now.

I’m not happy with how long it took them - with how many emails I had to send them asking for it - but they have issued the refund and that’s a credit to them.

Good to know they're secretly reading the forums (wink, wink)

I did the free trial. For anyone else - it is near the very bottom of the home page. I think they watermark it??? but you can get a good idea if it is worth going further than 20 mins with.

Downloaded the newest version a few days ago (PC Version) mainly because I have LR (one user / machine only, not truly standalone and expensive) My wife Cory also needs a decent editor and this was cheaper than LR AND you can instal it on up to 5 devices for no extra cost.

Initial reports from 'the boss' - outstanding, a lot to get your head around if you're not used to so many options but the filters / presets etc are outstanding. Only real downside - Cory is now revisiting all her Canada photo's and making mine look rubbish lol. I will let her keep testing it before I decide which to keep (Adobe has really wound me up with the 'you HAVE to go cloud base because it's what we want' - their email response to a truly stand alone version was verging on plain rude)

Extremely quick n dirty basic '5 second' edit

Yes it's a lot OTT but to be honest - I am quietly impressed and may well have to look a bit closer. oh and yes - I removed one tiny tree front and center within the 5 sec edit :-0

For the record you can install Adobe on 2 machines and you DON'T have to go cloud based.

Yes, but then you would have Adobe Photography CC.

Wow. Have some patience or use other software that does what you want it to do. Photos does asset management, and so does the Finder. There are third party solutions as well. What are you looking to do that absolutely requires a single interface?

Aperture still works with DNGs, right? If you like the controls of Aperture, try Raw Power from Gentlemen Coders, a raw converter made by the former lead of the Aperture project. No asset management, but you get continuing camera support and the raw controls you know from Aperture.

kirk

Using a 3rd party program to convert RAW images to TIFFs is something I've considered so I can keep using Aperture as my favored digital asset management AND image editing program. I know Aperture like the proverbial back of my hand. It is second nature to me.

But in addition to the fact that Aperture won't work with newer camera RAW images, Aperture contains bugs under every Mac OS above Yosemite. These bugs are relatively minor (all things considered) and I know how to work around them. But Apple's lack of support going forward means it will only get worse, not better. Photos is a POOR substitute for Aperture. It will likely never equal Aperture.

As for Luminar 2018, the trial version (14 days) is now available. I've downloaded it and like what I see so far. But it won't be a solution for me until it also has robust digital asset management. And it's frustrating that MacPhun was making the same promises (DAM) a year ago and it never materialized. I realize there are "reasons" for this, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.

Mark consider that you are the one who made the choice to stay with Aperture years after Apple publicly gave it the kiss of death. So you are at least partially responsible for any pain and suffering related to continued use or migration. ;-)a

If Aperture will open DNG files, why not use Adobe DNG Converter to migrate native raw files Aperture can't handle into raw DNG files it should handle?

I fully agree Photos is definitely not an Aperture replacement. It might be good for the casual shooter who mostly uses IOS cameras.

I have cancelled and deleted all my photo editing apps except those from Macphun (Luminar, Aurora, the CK apps) and Photo Mechanic. I use Photo Mechanic to do all the imports.

One of our photo clubs had a field trip with contest. Once I culled down to my candidates, the editing was very fast and all within Luminar. I won a first place. So I am a happy camper. :-)
