I've been given the green light from the wife to have a weekend to myself ... probably in late April (ish) of 2018. I own a Wilderness Systems Pungo 120, a Canon 80D, and I hope to have either the Canon 300mm f/4 L or the 400mm f/5.6 L. I also plan to use my Manfrotto 3001 tripod and Manfrotto Ballhead. Besides the lens, I don't plan to buy any other gear. It'll be hard enough acquiring the lens between now and then.

I live in Albany, NY. I could stay local. I could head north into the Adirondacks. Or I could head towards the ocean. I'd like to stay under 3 hours of drive time, but I'm open to suggestions farther.

I want to put myself in the best position to get "interesting wildlife". I know every answer to this thread is going to start with, "It depends on what you want to shoot". I get that, but given that I have a lot of time to plan, I was hoping to start a dialogue about the pro's and con's of different animal types based on my location and gear.

Anyone have any "Great Spots" that they know about? Personal stories? The one that got away stories? Bigfoot sightings? The loch ness monster?

Most you don't live in the northeast ... just thought I'd give it a shot.

Hi Kris.

Gary Luhm used to kayak a lot and has a website full with tips, sites, and gear suggestions (as for packing and protecting it).
Here's a link to his site: http://garyluhm.net/ (external link) - hope it helps.

Thanks Paul

...also, I just realized that this should be in the discussion forum rather than the image sharing forum. Sorry about that.

If you want to push it back a bit I'll probably be spending a weekend or two looking for loons with chicks in the Adirondacks in late June/early July. I take the kayak out on the creeks and marshes close to home for a couple hours here and there a lot too.

Here's a couple shot from my kayak the summer before last.
