I have 80d. I use it with Sigma 17-50mm, 105mm, Canon 10-18mm and 55-250mm. I am not able to carry 80d with me during travel. It doesn't fit in laptop backpack. I am thinking of getting SL2 to save the size. Any one went this path. What I am going to miss if i get SL2. Am i going to regret it. I am not really serious photographer. I just take family pics and occasional kids sports (soccer, karate).

Other option is M5 and switch to all EF-M lens. I am wondering if size savings are enough to squeeze SL2/M5 in my travel. I can get few occasional pics. Some times, I will travel every week to customer locations. I just placed order for SL2. But not completely convinced.

The problem is going to be lens size - you won't fit any body in a laptop bag with the lens mounted, and most EF mount lenses are going to be too big on their own. I have a Canon M6, and THAT is a small camera that would fit in a laptop bag. EF-M lenses have a smaller diameter, and would fit in the bag better as a result. It can also use all of your EF mount lenses with an adapter, and if you're married to the viewfinder the M5 is still thinner than other Canon bodies, albeit larger than the M6. I have a feeling the SL2 is still going to be too big when you add a lens or two, but hopefully it will work out for you.

I guess, I should have waited for a deal on M5. It seems to have all 80d features. Then I can slowly move to EFM lens. I am not able to cancel the order.

Based on my experience with the SL1, you will find the SL2 a very nice travel camera ... and now significantly improved, with the same sensor (albeit not the same AF system) as the 80D. I think you will find a way to shoehorn the kit into your bag,

Have you considered just carrying another small bag? I have a large backpack style bag I used to lug around all my gear and laptop in, but I got tired of lugging 30 lbs. of gear everywhere I went so I bought an Amazonbasics large DSLR bag to carry my daily kit. It's easily carried with one hand along with my laptop in another bag in the same hand, and can fit my 80D with grip, Sigma 18-35mm, Sigma 50-100mm, Tokina 11-16mm, wireless remote, tripod foot, spare batteries, charger, memory cards, rain cover, OTG adapter, wipes, rocket blower and more!

Yes you can probably squeeze a camera into your laptop bag, but you'd be better off carrying another bag with it so you don't have to sacrifice quality for space. Obviously if you're talking about flying an extra bag makes a difference, but then I wouldn't trust a camera rattling around a laptop bag on a flight either.

The SL2 is a great little camera.

None of them will fit in a bag likely as you described with the lenses attached. So just get used to taking the lens off and putting caps on. Everything into the bag separate.

I definitely would not move to all EF-M lenses. Variety is limited and re-sell (if you care) is limited and frankly they're all too expensive for what they are compared to the EF-S STM stuff. I'd say stick with the SL2 and EF-S glass.

Very best,

I don't know what kind of laptop backpack you have, nor whether you intend to use it just for the plane, or for a day of shooting.

I use my laptop bag pretty well only for the plane. It holds my 13" laptop plus 7D2 body, 100-400mm II (without the hood), 100mm L, SL1 body, and Sony RX100. I could probably get the 18-55mm in there too, but it is easier for it to go in the roll-a-board. The laptop bag also contains travel documents, snack, small hard drive, and other stuff. If you don't mind taking the lens off the camera, it shouldn't be a problem.

Once at the destination, the gear I need for the day goes into an inconspicuous canvas bag for shooting.

The SL2 is not good for sports, the AF system is the antiquated one from the old rebels and SL1.

Canon M5 with small prime lens might fit into backpack with laptop and other stuff. Thanks.

I am thinking of using it with 10-18 mm lens to shoot landscapes and scenarios.

I had a 70d and an SL1. I went on a trip this summer where I took the SL1, 10-18, 24mm stm pancake, and the 55-250. I was happy with the size and weight. The 24mm pancake lens might fit on the SL2 in your laptop bag. I did miss the AF system of the 70d, but it sounds like you have limited space.

Occasionally I try taking pics in kids sports (soccer and karate). I am using 80D. I like to see blinking focus points and information in VF with servo tracking. I miss all this with SL2 along with focus point coverage. I have to just use center point and keep it on the subject with SL2 servo tracking. Is there any level indicator with SL2. I always mess up keeping subject straight. 5 fps shooting with 6 Raw images before buffer filling up is fine for me. Canon should have at least used all cross type 9 focus points system like t4i/t5i.

Thanks

Very best,

Looks like SL2 is going to be very famous for people posting it on youtube. I will try to fit them in small separate bags and dump it in laptop backpack. Most probably i will travel with SL2 and 10-18mm lens. I am going to take some landscapes and interesting stuff during travel. I do not need any other lens.

I actually have a swissgear laptop which can take 17" laptop also. 80d with its own bag becomes very big and heavy to travel. It takes up most of the space. Probably I can fit in 80d as is in laptop bag (without its own bag).
