Hi everyone. I can't find a specific, or general forum to discuss Sigma lenses. It has been suggested that I try here.

I have a Canon 80D with a Canon 24mm f2.8 USM IS and a Sigma 18-250 macro HSM.

I can't find out how the macro works on the Sigma lens. Can anyone offer any decals?

Thanks in advance (and if this is the wrong place, I am very sorry).

David

It looks like this lens is like some other zoom lenses that claim to be macro. They're not like conventional fixed length macro lenses which let you have a shorter minimum focus distance. The shortest minimum focus distance for this Sigma 18-250mm is 0.35m. If you try the longer FLs with the lens, and seeing what minimum distance keeps focus, then that will be the most macro it will get. Technically, to be macro, the magnified image has to be at least the same proportion as the sensor.

Daverose got it, Sigma likes to play games with terminology. Their definition of macro on a non-macro lens simply means "close focusing distance or MFD", allowing you to enlarge by getting a bit closer than other similar lenses.

In all fairness to Sigma, many lens manufacturers do the same.

Absolutely true, and Daverose already pointed that out.

And as the OP only mentioned Sigma, I was very targeted in my reply.
