I've been having a hard time finding 11x17 ready-made frames (11x14 and 16x20 are easily available). Anyone know of any on-line sources?

I like www.pictureframes.com (external link) a lot...if you go to their personal frame shop you can even upload your picture and see what it will look like with different mats and frames. It takes a lot of the guesswork out!

Print 13x19 instead and use a 18x24 frame with matting - will work perfect.

I'm guessing his printer prints at 11x17 max. Is that why you asked, DKD?

Thanks for your help everyone. Reason for 11x17: I had these files printed by my local camera store and the 11x17 option was better for the format of the image than 11x14 (closer to full frame).

If they are printed at 11x17, then you do not want 11x17 frames. You probably want at least 18x24, which is a standard size. It is the mat that will have to be custom cut. You'll want a 18x24 mat with a 10-3/4 x 16-3/4 opening.

The problem in a nutshell: our cameras are 3x2 and commonly available frames are 4x5. The simple solution, as Steve W hints at, is get a mat that alters the proportion.

It's cheap to ship mats. It's expensive to ship frames. I buy standard size frames locally (scout around for sales and stockpile 'em).

www.framedestinations.com (external link) has nice mats 11x17 inner opening, with 18x24 frame size, for $6.

You should get your frame first, and figure out how you'll mount the photo. Probably best is to also buy foam-core acid-free backs (order at same time as the mattes). A large T-square is a useful tool. Pencil in where the photo sits on the mount board, apply a THIN layer of glue, mount the photo, apply glue to the edges of the mount board, and apply the mat. Print your logo and website on a large sticky label, apply to the back of the mount board. For a class act, get a pen like this (external link) and sign the lower left corner of the mat.

good luck.

I use 16X20" a lot for my 11X17" prints,. works well and usually my aspect ratio is "squarere" than the full 17" wide anyway.

Likewise I love 18X24" frame for 13X19" prints. This gives an even 3" matte for a bordered print @ 12"X18"
