1:1 is slow but it supposed to be better down the road. The crew at Lightroom Queen suggested Standard for Preview Build. i have not read this all of this thread but I think sidecars are for cameras that do not produce jpeg previews so they need to shoot in RAW and Jpeg. I'm still exploring this.

I also read that if you are running anti virus software it will read each file. I running bit defender in my mac. I have not really noticed any slow import except 1:1 but I excluded LR ad PS from form defender. I'll see if there is any improvement.

I also noticed that when LR gets choky usually everything on the mac is. I have a cleaning/tune routine I use that is more web browser related but it seems to help.

Checked the configuration: There is no presets set for the Import. Still, if I change the from 1:1 to Minimal, and close the LR, when it restarts, it still have 1:1. More investigation is needed.

The CPU problem points to a system issue, not an LR issue. But LR is a resource hog and will test the system. How is the boot drive?

I thought more about it. The CPU utilization never reaches 100 percent, so it should not be a problem. The boot is fast as I have a fast SSD drive. The files are imported to a regular spin drive, and it is also fairly fast by drive standards, 7500 rpm.

Mystery! :-)

From one of the links.

If you’re concerned about the disc space that they take up, you can set them to delete after a fixed time (in Catalog Settings), or you can discard 1:1 previews on demand by selecting the photos and choosing Library menu > Previews > Discard 1:1 Previews.

So it appears to take advantage of sidecar previews you need to shoot in RAW and Jpeg. You get fast temporary previews.

Also in preferences you can choose this if you do and use sidecars when importing.

Self quoting. Sorry. From this link. You can build or discard previews after. Cool. I did not know that. Smart previews are pretty cool as well.

Scroll down to optimize the catalogue. Might help somewhere else.

No, I do not care about the disk space. Currently the files are stored on a 4TB drive, and I can add another 8TB if I need to. Storage is now cheap.

Will leave additional experimenting for Wednesday night. I came home on yesterday from a week in Moscow and a week in Paris, the jet lag is killing me. And tomorrow night is a meeting of our camera club, I hope I will not fall asleep at the meeting!

That last performance link to Adobe has some good stuff.

A whole bunch of info here.

Preferences - Performance - Generate Previews in parallel and use Graphics processor

Lightroom - Catalogue settings - File Handling you can tell when you want to delete 1:1 previews if you import that way.

In Library panel

File - Optimize the catalogue - now and then.

In Library - Previews you can build or discard previews.

In Lightroom - Catalogue settings - File handling you can select the Standard preview size. I'm using the default standard size of 1440 and quality = medium. Getting more info on that. Not having any issues but I'm curios.

A few more things

-Keep the catalog and preview cache in the same folder

- Leave autowrite XMP turned off

- Keep 1:1 previews as long as possible (if you use it)

- Increase the Camera Raw cache size

- Keep standard-size previews as small as possible

- Delete the Lightroom previews cache

Last thing tonight. From the ;ink. I was wondering if you needed to shoot RAW and Jpeg and you don't. The author recommends trying it to see how it performs.

The author says when you choose embedded and sidecar you should see this - only in the preview build mode. I just tried it with RAW files only and I did see it.

One entirely unrelated thing that I am curious about -

@Lbsimon > LightRoom 6.1 Import Too Slow> Since fairly recently the import of files from the SD card to the LightRoom 6.1 became unbearably slow....And finally, I work with the raw files created by the 5D4.

Since you have a 5D4, why are you still running LR 6.1? Preliminary support for the 5D4 was in 6.7, fuller support in 6.8 and the current version is 6.13. And how are you importing to 6.1 which would not accept 5D4 Raws? Or is that just a recurring typo in both title and text?

Thanks Tom.

I found the setting, but there is something that I cannot handle: I can change the file handling to Minimal, but it did not stay, and every time I open the LR, it defaults to 1:1. Is there a way to set Minimal as default?

I noticed it uses the last setting imported with. It seemed my default was Minimal as I never touched it before a few weeks ago.
