So I recently picked up the 6d Mkii thanks to the price drop/rebate/printer bundle. That being said I'm coming from a Canon 7d the following Sigma Lenses:

10-20mm f3.5-5.6
30mm f1.4 (before art series)
17-50m f2.8

I enjoyed all 3 and mainly used the 17-50 f2.8. Now that I'm jumping to full frame I'm thinking I should go all in and get the Canon 24-70 f2.8 ii. That $1699 price though...

I'm thinking maybe I can get something else in the meantime but part of me says just to go and get what I want now. Are there any lens recommendations on sale now that anyone recommends for where I'm coming from?

Thanks for helping a noob...well based on my post count...Lol.

Oh I shoot mostly car stuff and family portrait, candid, sometimes I'll take pics at a friends wedding as well.

I adore the 16-35mm f/4L IS on FF,. (it' nice on a crop too)

Also if cost is preventing the Canon L MK II, maybe look at a used Tamron 24-70 f.2,8 VC. Great bang for your buck. Or if you don;t need f/2.8, the f/4L is also very nice compromise.

The Canon 24-70/2.8L II is really excellent.

But aside from specific lens advice, here is one thing I learned about myself when I went from my 30D to my 5D (In 2008, I think). I had used EF-S 10-22 and EF-S 17-55 lenses on the 30D. Based on that, I picked up a 17-40L and 24-105L when I got the 5D (the 24-105 was kitted with the camera). I didn't think too much about that otherwise.

Long story short, I eventually realized I didn't really need the 17-40. What I found is that the ~28mm equivalent wide end of the 17-XX lenses on 1.6X format are not wide enough for me, but 24mm on a FF camera is actually enough. I mean, I have taken some shots I like with a lens wider than 24mm, but really hot having an ultrawide has not been too big of a deal.

You might find the same. There is a world of difference between 24mm and 28mm (equivalent).

$1699 for the 24-70 2.8L II is still lower then the $2199 I paid for it;-)a It is the go to walk around lens though: the FLs are "normal" and bland, but the lens has wonderful sharpness and color balance (the color contrast is what swayed me to it instead of the Tamron). If you're looking for versatility in zooms, I'd say the best trio is the 16-35mm f4, 24-70mm 2.8 II, and 70-200mm 2.8 II IS. Get them in stages if you must. The 16-35mm is the best value, and if you can't fathom the 70-200mm 2.8 II IS, the f4 IS is good (and might be preferable to some for its smaller weight).

Thanks for the replies. I did think that getting the 16-35mm f4 might be a place to start. Not a scary price and it seems to have rave reviews. For the wide end I don't need 2.8. Then I'll wait for my $350 rebate and possible a refurb sale to get the 24-70mm f2.8ii.

I also thought that I may just jump on the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art. It's on sale now at $799 w/dock at B&H and I know at some point I'll want a prime with 1.4.

Decisions, Decisions...I know I'm all over the placed it seem, but great suggestions!

In the meantime I'm using the 28-135 that came with my 7D kit and it's not bad...but the lens creep and just total operation feels so cheap. Let's me play with my camera at least...

Hopefully you were looking at the Canon refurbished lenses that Canon had on their Black Friday deals. They had the 24-70 f/2.8L II for $1,291.35 this morning, but they are all gone now.

Oh I shoot mostly car stuff and family portrait, candid, sometimes I'll take pics at a friends wedding as well.

So that 17-50 F2.8 on APS-C would have basically an approximate DOF and FOV as the 24-70 F4L IS on full frame. That's a great lens and much less costly. Otherwise, shop a Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC ($700ish), they're great for the cost.

That 10-20 can be directly replaced with a 17-40L or a 16-35F4L IS depending on budget.

That 30 F1.4 on APS-C is approximately what you'd experience using a 50mm F1.4 on full frame (with some DOF changes, more appropriate would be something like an F1.2 or F1.0 but lets be realistic).

So if you liked what you had and wanted to replicate it, it would be a 17-40/16-35, 50 F1.4 and 24-70 F4.

That said, you have the opportunity to build a great lens line up from scratch now and focus on what you really enjoyed the most and you can improve on things. Just take it slow. Shop used/refurb. And don't be afraid of 3rd party lenses.

Very best,

Unfortunately, I missed this one. That lens is always sold out so quickly. I'll be on the lookout for it in the future.

As someone mentioned earlier, it's exciting to build my lenses from scratch with the new body. After some research, and with the help of a sale, I ended up getting the Sigma 35mm F1.4 Art lens from B&H. It was on sale for $799 and included the Sigma Dock for free. I've been using it since yesterday and I have to say that this is a great focal length.

Not sure what my future lenses will be but my wallet is empty for now and I'm going to enjoy this prime lens for now.

Thanks again guys for the recommendations.

To get full advantage of the 6Dii focusing you will probably want to go f2.8.
