Zeiss is not lazy nor ignoring autofocus, they simply can't make lenses with AF for Canon/Nikon cameras due to patents.

My four Tamron lenses for my Canon all have auto focus. No patent obstacle for Tamron apparently.

But as far as Zeiss, if that's the niche they choose, then all is fine. I used my new Zeiss today and found the manual focus fairly easy to use. The long "throw" of the focus ring sure gives a fine edge to it.

Indeed, because Tamron is an Asian company. The patent issues boil down to 'only Asian companies can manufacture lenses with AF for Canon/Nikon'.

Zeiss does make lenses with AF for Sony cameras, no problem.

I do have a feeling if there are still rangefinders Leica L Leica M digital and many film rangefinders are still around Ziess will always make manual ficus lenses. I prefer them by a lot. And focusing with a rangefinder, even with old eyes like mine, is not nearly as difficult than focusing with a DSLR.

Heres a great new lens from Leica M.

Beyond the licensing issues outside of Japan.....Sony E-mount will actually give the AF spec to third party manufacturers and collaborate with them on the lens design. It's a controlled open source format. This is what makes AF lenses E-mount from Zeiss and Rokinon possible as they don't need to reverse engineer the AF spec.
