Is it possible to take good solar photos in the hydrogen-alfa spectrum using a DSLR with the proper filter? If so what is the specific filter? The companies that produce the HA filters seem to be for dedicated camera/lens/telescope systems for solar photography. I haven't found any screw on filters in 77mm (for the Canon 100-400m), or any filter for the Canon 600mm f/4 (which doesn't accept screw-on but rather a drop-in). A dedicated solar telescope for isn't an option.

Yes you can

I have also purchased a Daystar Camera Quark filter they have adaptors for either Canon EOS or Nikon
and just click in between your camera and telephoto lens

https://www.bhphotovideo.com …uark_eyepiece_filter.html (external link)

They are available as a Prominence filter approx. 0.65 - 0.75 A or Chromosphere approx. 0.45 - 0.55 A

they also come with an eyepiece adaptor, so instead of your camera on the end, you can put your eyepiece there

EDIT .... just reread your post, there are no simple screw-on filters. Ha solar filters are very specialised and require a lot more technology
than just a piece of filter glass over the front of your lens .... this is why they are expensive :-)
