Hi,

I see Nikon D800 goes almost 35-40% less than the price of similar condition D810 on eBay, in some cases even more. My question is, if this is still worth to go with D800 and invest that extra cash in a decent glass.

I am a very casual hobbyist and don't use my cameras that offten. Only for family functions, kids and nature photos, not into video, etc.

Do I need anything that D810 have and that I be missing on D800.

Appreciate comments to help me make my decision.

With regards, Pendu

What about the D750 or even a crop camera. If you dont shoot very often and are looking at saving money a crop camera with a flash for family functions,a tripod for nature and just a decent lens for whatever else should be all that you would need. All of these can easily be purchased used.

Good suggestion, I will look for D750. I have sold my Canon 5D Mark III to try Nikon and was looking for something similar to 5d in Nikon lineup.

I was thinking of buying either a D810 or D800/D800E.

Thanks, I will look for D750s as well.

There is a good comparison here (external link).

I have both (the D800 is my backup) and as far as image quality the two are comparable. The biggest difference for me as a landscape shooter is the better quality Live View on the D810, which is still not as good as my old 5D3. In low-light conditions the live view is pretty bad on the D800 and slightly better on the D810. Also, the base ISO of 64 vs. 100 on the D800 is benefit.

Hi Dave,

Thanks, I just picked up a D800 from eBay with only less than 8000 shots and in very good condition. I think that will be more than enough for my needs.

I am okay with base 100 ISO and don't use live view that often.

Regards, Pendu

I would second the statement that you won't go wrong with either the D750 or D800 based on what you described your usage as.
