Thanks, Jake. I have been wanting a new, larger display to replace my Samsung 21-inch monitor for awhile. I wasn't planning on buying one right now, but that was too good of a deal to pass up.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I was thinking about a 4k, 27" monitor. Had this in mind...

I just got a new Macbook Pro and I'm trying to wait for 4k w/usb C and HDR (also to use w/Xbox S to come down in price. For now I use a Dell U2414H that serves me well.

I think I'll be waiting a while for a decently priced monitor of what I just listed...oh well. It's not like I need to spend the money!

The original offer ended, but now is back for $399. There is also the 4k monitor mentioned by Perfectly Frank for $399, also made by Dell. I think it is time to upgrade from my 22" monitor.

What resolution works better for photo editing on a 27" monitor, 2560x1440 or 3840x2160?

edit: For others with the same question, I did a quick search and found several useful threads. The comments about differences in scaling between Windows 7 and 10 were especially helpful. I also welcome comment from people with direct experience.

As for Res, I decided I wanted the lower res, vs. 4K for two reasons:

- Aspect Ratio.
4K is even more widescreen ratio than 2460x1440, I would prefer something more along the lines of 16:10. I don't watch or edit video, so I would prefer more height. I can;t get 16:10 unless I go up to 30"+ or back down to 24", so 16:9 it is.

- Photoshop menus.
I am not subscribing to cloud based Photoshop. adobe in it's continuous drive to be many HUGE steps behind the evolution of hardware, in it's last stand alone version of PSCS6, was STILL hopelessly behind for a "graphics companies" dominant "graphics app" having no method to allow a user to read any of the menus in PSCS6 on a 4K or other ultra high def screen.
My eyesight is waning. So lower res it is.

Thank you for the input. I am leaning toward the 4k but am concerned about text and menus scaling, especially since I am using Windows 7. I presently scale text on my 22" 1920x1080 monitor by 125%. I tried a test yesterday scaling it 150% (the maximum in my Windows display options) and Lightroom 6 and Affinity Photo both seemed to scale well, and that might be enough. I plan to add the new monitor and have a two monitor system, so I possibly could mainly work with menus on the old monitor, although I have not tried this before.

I don't like the Lightroom subscription model for my needs, and may switch to Capture One. Jake, I believe you use that software, does it scale properly with higher resolution?

I actually haven't tried yet.

I use C1 as you know, and also do the two monitor trick, one in portrait, it's a Dell 24" 16:10, and the new 27" will be the main monitor in landscape orientation. It will replace a 24" 16:10 CRT.
I have not had issue with C1 menus as yet on my current monitors, but not using ultra high res.

I ran into the ultra high res problem with Adobe non subscription products when I got my laptop with ultra high res. Windows 8?10 handled all it just fine, but PS in almost unusable.

If you are going to dock most things on a lower res monitor that actually seems a like a good solution.

That is what I am wanting to get, I have 2 24" monitors at home and 3 at work. I want one large monitor, I am so tired of moving my head to each monitor. One of my monitors at work is dedicated to Outlook.

After some serious concern, I finally got my 27" up and running. (had to go into the monitors on screen menus to tell it to use the correct input! I thought it was dead for a long time!)

It's no 24" Aperture Grill CRT, but it'll do :)

/rant, I will NEVER understand how video aspect ratios managed to become dominant on computer workstation monitors. It is really not at all productive!
