New laptop w/ 8th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-8550U

I bought the HP Spectre x360 for editing in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.
The specs are- 8th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-8550U, 16gigs ram, 512 ssd, 4K display
NVIDIA® GeForce® MX150 (2 GB)

When editing in Lightroom, raw, it seems choppy and slow when moving the sliders.
Is this new 8gen i7 not powerfull enough? Or is anybody else using this chip set and what are your thoughts?

That sounds like Lightroom in my experience. Substantially slower than competitors like DxO's RAW editor. It was my secondary reason for moving to DxO. (First being its much better noise reduction)

Your system has such high specs that I would seriously be surprised if it was a hardware problem. Maybe try updating your drivers and see if that helps.

Never thought I had to consider Lightroom as the problem.
I’m also testing out the Dell XPS 9560 w/7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ Quad Core Processor and 32 gig of ram w/ 1tb ssd.
And have a MacBook Pro 15” 2.9 processors, 16 gig ram on order.
What other editing programs should I try ( hopefully that offers a trial offer) ?

It's the only program that I feel is comparable to Lightroom in power and it's a good deal stronger in a lot of areas like noise reduction and protecting highlights. The only downside I have experienced with it is that Lightroom's catalogue is better developed. Luckily you can implement Lightroom and DxO in your workflow together. It's possible to export images from DxO into Lightroom very quickly to take advantage of the catalogue or other tools. DxO also special tailors its auto settings (extremely well) based on the camera and lens combination you are using. Both programs do not harm original files as you edit.

If you are using Lightroom 6 or later try turning off the GPU acceleration. I have had issues with it in the past, you have a discrete graphics card but it may not be up to the task or not be compatible. I noticed stuttering and lag with it on.

I’ll give that a try.
I did download DxO and it’s also is slow a choppy, once I made and adjustment it takes a few seconds or more to see the adjustment.

Update- I turned off the GPU Excelerator in lightroom and it made it worse so I turned it back on. The graphics card is NAVIDA GeForce MX 150.

I’d be interested in hearing from others that are using the new Intel i7 8 gen 8550U processor for photo editing and what there thoughts are.

That definitely should not be happening with DxO. It is much faster than Lightroom. Try updating your drivers for your GFX and CPU; see if that helps.

That's to be expected. The clock speed on the i7-7700 is *much* higher, and image editing apps are processor speed hungry/intensive. The new x360 is nice for consuming media, but I'd stick with the XPS15 9560 for your image editing work.

The i7-7700 is also a different processor in a different product line than the 7700HQ being discussed. Desktop vs Laptop target lines.

k9trainer... I would be interested to see if anything is getting pegged while you are editing. Opening task manager and watching CPU/RAM/Disk usage can be telling. Your 8550U has a 1.8GHz base clock but Can boost to 4.0GHz with with multiple cores and still is at 3.7 with all cores loaded. This all has to stay within the 15W Thermal Design Power (assuming HP didn't move that down to conserve battery life). Even 15W is extremely low for an 8 thread processor, these lean laptop i7s don't have the grunt of the desktop variants.

You may want to look into power settings in windows and ensure you are on a high power or maximum performance power setting. If the laptop is trying to conserve power, that could be the culprit.

i had the same problem and found out it is the 4k...adobe cant handle it ...
photoshop was slower on a new i7 – 7700hq
i then started comparing the ps times with my old macbook pro from 2011, which was faster
and it still was faster then the new macbook. ( all the same working file)
same with lr...
i gave back the laptop and will buy maself an hd one ...
its a pitty that adobe cant handle it.
they as well have a lot of old code

This is why I use Photoshop to edit and Lightroom to organize, sync, etc. Photoshop is a lot more responsive imo.
