Best mid-sized to large hiking camera backpack?

I'm mainly looking for comfort for longer, multi-mile hikes. Quick camera access is not as important to me. Must be able to easily carry a 21-24" tripod and 15" laptop.

Right now I use the Tamrac 5586 Expedition 6x but it leaves something to be desired. Not really sure what it is, but I think it stems from how "boxy" it feels on my back, and I want something slightly larger. Also it's only rated up to a 14" laptop, but I've honestly never tried my 15" to see if it will fit (Dell claims the XPS15 can fit into 13" bags due to small bezels. But again, never tried it.)

I was thinking about going with the Expedition 7x or 8x, but I feel there have to be better options out there for the price.

I am using an Osprey Strato 34 and really enjoy it. It has an internal frame and the back panel has an air space so it breaths. I just use lens bags and wraps. I really like this bag for 10+ mile days.

It does not appear to be a dedicated camera backpack. Where do you put your camera bodies?

I either use the BlackRapid backpack strap and carry it at my side or just wrap the body in a wrap.

Thanks for your suggestion. It definitely looks to have a more balanced and "body hugging" form factor, which is what I'm looking for. So many dedicated camera bags lack that, they become super boxy due to their padding.

That was my issue also, even with the outdoor-oriented gear from Mindshift or fstop it still feels too sluggish. Now I can pack gear for the day and even do a overnighter with a hammock.

Where would you put a tripod on that backpack? The expedition models have a dedicated tripod spot.

The GuraGear Bataflae 32L is what I use and love it! But, I just read your post again and you want something for a laptop as well. Still going to post this in case you haven't seen these amazing packs.

I couldn't find that one but I found the 32 Pro on B&H. Looks ok, but no less boxy than my expedition 6x, and holy hell it's expensive. It says there is a spot for a tripod, but I don't see where it would go. And a laptop is not a necessity, but would be nice. The 32 Pro says it can hold a 15" laptop though.

Not sure if this will fill the bill, but it is a very attractive price. Normally $300 and on sale for a limited time at $130.

There should be a multi point tripod/monopod attachment on the side. Mine has a pocket and a strap to hold it.

Thanks. This bag looks nice but honestly it seems way too similar to my current backpack. My favorite I've seen so far is the LOWEPRO PROTACTIC 450 AW. Seems less boxy because it has a rear opening (good when you can't watch your back) so your gear is up against your back.

Bags compete manufacturer to manufacturer and hence are very similar. Look for desirable features, rear opening is one as you point out. Quality and reputation are other things to look for.

Personally, this "boxy" look you refer to is not objectionable, at least to my eye. The two bags appear to be very similar.
