Hi, everyone! I’m new to the forums. First post! I just upgraded from a Nikon D7100 to a Canon 5D Mark IV. It just arrived today, but I’m very disappointed.

What claims to be excellent autofocus during video is actually a very audible mechanic autofocus sound that is detectable in the playback of the video! Has anyone else experienced this when filming video with the 5D Mark IV?

Although I’ll be using an external mic system, I’m disappointed that if I tried to shoot anything without an external mic, the camera would pick up the adjusting sounds in the video. This isn’t acceptable.

Am I don’t something wrong or is this how everyone else’s camera is noisily autofocusing like this?

Thank you
Serena @ Thrift Diving

I’m not sure. This is the lens I ordered with it:

Also, I recorded a clip with my phone so you can hear all the clicking autofocus noise with it, especially around the 30 second mark:

Highly likely that its the IS system in the lens that is making the noise that you're hearing. Do you have any other lenses that you can switch out to test?

Maybe turn IS off and record? See if you can still hear it.

Also most likely picking up the sound of the USM motor in the lens driving the Autofocus, best get a lens with an STM type motor for silent AF operation during video shooting.

The body is most likely not at fault here.

A coupla bodies and a few lenses

For video friendly AF lenses you need to look for ones with STM or nano USM drive motors. At the moment IIRC there are only two nano USM drive lenses avilable. Although there are quite a number of STM lenses in the Canon lineup, the majority of them are EFs mount for APS-C bodies only.

Because the Canon 35mm format sensor cameras have been slow in incorporating the dual pixel live view/video AF system Canon have not been too quick to add STM or nano USM drive options in the EF lenses.

If you want good video AF support in a Canon DSLR you would be much better off with one of the APSC models like the 80D.

The 5d4 has DPAF, no need to get the 80d for this. The camera doesn't make sounds during auto focusing, it is the lens as has been stated, a video friendly lens with STM or nanotechnology USB is needed. An external mic is going to be better than the on board mic though, and then other lenses can be used, even the AF motors on STM/nano USM might be heard, just less noticeable.

Your choice is accept it or return it.
You will probably hear the Image Stabilizer too.

Rycote® Lyre® shock mounting is a product used to solve the problem, but you need an external mic.

There is nothing wrong with your camera. That is AF noise, and it can't be avoided while using the internal microphone. Your choices seem to be:

1.) Buy an external microphone.
2.) Buy a lens that dosn't make AF (or IS) noise.

As to number 2, for full frame there are few to choose from: 40 STM, 24-105 STM, and 70-300 II. I used to own the 24-105 STM. It is really quiet wrt IS and AF while doing video. I currently own both nano-USM lenses, 18-135 USM (apsc only), and the 70-300II. Both are also really quiet wrt AF and IS noise. Both are optically superior to their respective predecessors. Both focus at least as fast as any ring-USM lens Canon makes.
